Erzurum Provincial Disaster and Emergency (AFAD) Directorate instructors explained to students at Kazım Karabekir Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School what to do in case of an earthquake and to teachers what to do in case of a fire. Following the briefing in the classrooms and halls, students evacuated the school after the earthquake occurred according to the scenario and the drop-cover-hold practice, while teachers intervened in the fire with the information they received.
AFAD Erzurum Provincial Directorate continues its training for schools. 29 expert trainers, headed by AFAD Education Specialist Yasemin Gök, provided disaster awareness training at Kazım Karabekir Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Palandöken district. AFAD trainers, who spread out to the classes in the school where there are approximately 700 students, provided information about disasters and explained what to do in the event of a possible earthquake. The trainers demonstrated the drop-cover-hold tactic that should be applied in the event of an earthquake. Following the theoretical information in the classes, 700 students evacuated the 3-story building in 25 minutes and 4 seconds with the bell ringing as required by the drill scenario and went to the assembly area.
FIRE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS
AFAD trainers also gave lessons to teachers on duty at the school on fire extinguishing. Instructor Bülent Kan, who explained fire intervention methods to students gathered in the conference hall, explained that electrical and oil fires should not be fought with water. Teachers gathered in the school yard and learned how to fight flames with a fire extinguisher under the supervision of the trainers.
WE CONSIDERED THE CLASS BELL AS THE MOMENT OF EARTHQUAKE
AFAD Education Specialist Yasemin Gök said that they provided training to the school with 24 classrooms with 29 staff. Stating that the trainers provided information on what to do in disasters and emergencies as if they were teaching a lesson in each branch, Gök said, “The trainers taught what to do before, during and after a disaster in the classrooms. We accepted the lesson bell as the moment of the earthquake. We did the duck, cover and hold movements with the students. We carried out the evacuation process 30 seconds later, after the earthquake was over. We went to the assembly areas. We made sure that no students were left inside with our teachers and trainer friends.”
Yasemin Gök, who said that they also gave information to teachers about the fire, said, “We informed them about the precautions they should take before the fire and what they can do in case of a fire. We showed our teachers how to use the fire extinguisher.”
