Hafeet Railway has launched a major project that will establish an important logistics link between Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The project aims to boost regional trade and build a sustainable transportation infrastructure. The railway network will create a major logistics revolution with an investment of $3 billion.
Projects and Investments
India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Chinese state-owned company Power China have signed contracts to set up logistics centres for the project. These facilities will facilitate freight transport and strengthen connectivity between Oman and the UAE. The logistics centres in Al Buraimi and Sohar will contribute significantly to accelerating regional trade.
The railway hub in Sohar will include infrastructure not only for freight transport but also for the maintenance of locomotives and wagons. This innovation will increase operational efficiency and ensure uninterrupted cargo movement across the region.
Load Carrying Capacity and Environmentally Friendly Features
The Hafeet Railway will offer an environmentally friendly and efficient transportation alternative. Freight trains will carry more than 25.000 tons of cargo at a time, creating a large logistics force with this capacity. The railway will also minimize its impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions by 90% compared to other transportation methods.
China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation has undertaken the task of designing and manufacturing freight wagons specifically for the project, designed for bulk materials and container transport. These wagons will improve the railway's efficiency in freight transport.
Impact on Trade Development
The railway project, which began with the agreement signed by Oman and the UAE in September 2022, was branded as the Hafeet Railway and connects Sohar Port to the UAE transportation network. This infrastructure consists of tunnels, bridges and high-capacity freight transport systems. In addition to its high carrying capacity, the railway line also stands out with its environmentally friendly features.
This project will enable regional trade to take place faster and more efficiently.
