
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the amount of cargo handled in ports reached 2025 million 48 thousand 626 tons in January 513. Emphasizing that cargo handling increased by 12,8 percent compared to the same month last year, Minister Uraloğlu said, “Thus, an all-time monthly cargo handling record was broken in January.”
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu evaluated the maritime statistics for January 2025. Stating that they continue their efforts to ensure that Turkey gets a greater share of maritime trade, Uraloğlu said, “The amount of cargo handled in ports increased by 12,8 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 48 million 626 thousand 513 tons. Thus, an all-time monthly cargo handling record was broken in January.”
Minister Uraloğlu also underlined that the amount of containers handled in the said month increased by 14 percent compared to the same month last year and reached 1 million 155 thousand 514 TEU.
“International Freight Transportation Reached 399 Million 414 Thousand 557 Tons”
Uraloğlu stated that the amount of cargo sent to foreign ports in January increased by 2024 percent compared to the same month in 5,3, reaching 11 million 792 thousand 496 tons, and made the following statements in his statement:
“The amount of cargo arriving at our ports from abroad increased by 16,3 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 25 million 625 thousand 502 tons. In January, international cargo transportation increased by 2024 percent compared to January 12,6, reaching 37 million 417 thousand 998 tons.”
Aliağa Regional Port Authority at the Summit
Uraloğlu, stating that the highest cargo handling in the first month of the new year was carried out in the port facilities operating within the administrative borders of the Aliağa Regional Port Authority with 7 million 724 thousand 97 tons of cargo on the basis of regional port authorities, made the following assessment: “Aliağa Regional Port Authority was followed by Kocaeli Regional Port Authority with 7 million 714 thousand 380 tons and İskenderun Regional Port Authority with 6 million 589 thousand 317 tons.”
Uraloğlu stated that in January, transit cargo transportation by sea in ports increased by 12,3 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 5 million 833 thousand 4 tons, while the amount of cargo carried by cabotage increased by 14,6 percent, reaching 5 million 375 thousand 511 tons.
The Cargo Type with the Highest Increase is Non-Briquetted Hard Coal
Uraloğlu noted that the type of cargo that showed the highest increase in January compared to the previous month was non-briquetted coal, and that 3 million 178 thousand 643 tons of non-briquetted coal was handled in the ports.
Uraloğlu also stated that Portland cement was the most carried cargo type in ships from ports to go abroad in the said month with 886 thousand 263 tons and shared the information that “Portland cement was followed by diesel and clinker cargo types. Unbriquetted coal was the most carried cargo type in ships coming to our ports from abroad. This was followed by crude oil and LNG cargoes, respectively.”
Most Freight Came From Russia
Uraloğlu noted that in January, the highest amount of cargo carried out by sea from ports to go abroad was transported to Italy, followed by transports to the USA and Spain.
Uraloğlu stated that the largest amount of cargo arriving at ports by sea is transported from Russia, and made the following assessment:
“Of the 37 million 417 thousand 998 tons of overseas cargo handled in our ports in January, 7,2 percent was carried by Turkish-flagged ships. In the month in question, the amount of cargo carried abroad by Turkish-flagged ships increased by 2 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, with 708 million 146 thousand 14,3 tons. The amount of cargo carried abroad by foreign-flagged ships increased by 34 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, with 709 million 852 thousand 12,5 tons.”
