Alstom has agreed to sell its railway production facility in Goerlitz, Germany, to the KNDS consortium, a major player in the defense sector. The consortium, formed by the merger of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter Systems, plans to transform the Goerlitz facility into a production center for battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
The conversion process of the facility is expected to be completed and production to begin by 2027. As a result of the agreement, 700 to 350 of the current 400 employees will remain employed, while Alstom plans to offer jobs to 100 of the remaining employees. In addition, KNDS will be able to provide employment opportunities to 75 more personnel at its other sites.
This sale provides a step into the defense industry in line with Alstom's strategic direction and aims to provide a solid future for the facility.
