Iceberg Disaster in Russia: 100 Fishermen Rescued

In the Sea of ​​Okhotsk off the southern coast of Sakhalin, a great danger occurred when an ice floe carrying fishermen broke away from the shore. According to the statement made by the Regional Emergencies Ministry, the rescue operation launched in response to this situation was completed successfully and 139 fishermen were safely evacuated.

Rescue Operation

The incident occurred on Wednesday off the southern coast of the Korsakovsky district. After the ice floe moved 2,5 kilometers from the shore, a crack widened by ten meters. Following this development, a rescue operation was quickly launched. Using the Mi-8 helicopter and the Khivus hovercraft, 31 specialists and 17 units of equipment were used to transport the fishermen to safety.

Fishermen Refusing to Be Evacuated

Initially, some fishermen refused to evacuate despite the danger. However, after persuasion efforts by emergency teams, all fishermen were evacuated safely.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that the operation was completed successfully, stating that “All fishermen were evacuated from the ice floe.” Such precautions and rescue efforts against possible risks are of great importance in ensuring maritime safety in the region.
