Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay said, “We repeatedly express our respect to a great leader and the mother who raised him in front of this mausoleum on many occasions. This stems from our loyalty, our belief in the Republic, and our devotion to Atatürk and his values. Zübeyde Anne, who passed away in İzmir on January 14, 1923, lost her life exactly 102 years ago. Unfortunately, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was on a tour of the country that day and was making preparations to establish the Republic of Turkey after the War of Independence was won, wanted her mother to be buried here. The administrators of that period wanted to build a large and magnificent mausoleum. Atatürk said ‘no’. He said, ‘Bring a stone from Yamanlar and put that stone, I want a grave like that’. Atatürk was able to visit her days after her death… Zübeyde Hanım raised her children with difficulties. Atatürk fought with the love and strength he felt for his mother during those difficult days. The War of Independence was also a war won with the moral support of Zübeyde Hanım. Zübeyde Anne is a strong example of how a mother should stand by her child, both while raising her child and while fighting to save this country. We see Atatürk's gift of Zübeyde Anne to these lands as an honor he gave to İzmir. Behind the meaning of his mother being entrusted to us lies the value Atatürk gave to İzmir and his belief in the people of İzmir. There is his belief that the people of İzmir will protect the Republic and their own heritage.”

President Dr. Cemil Tugay, who stated that their gratitude to Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Zübeyde Hanım who raised him will never end, said, “Our gratitude to Zübeyde Hanım, the great person who raised him, will never end. If Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had not fought that battle, not only would there not be a Republic of Turkey today, but none of us can even imagine what kind of state would exist on these lands, what kind of life would be lived, and what kind of sorrows our nation would experience on these lands. Thank God, such a hero came, fought that battle, that war was won, and the independent Republic that we are all proud of was established afterwards. Therefore, no gratitude, no kind words can repay what they have done for us.”

President Tugay, who said that they will protect the legacy left by Atatürk until the end, concluded his speech as follows:
“On the 102nd anniversary of her death, I respectfully and gratefully remember Zübeyde Hanım, her precious child, the great leader of all of us, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and her comrades in struggle. I would like to reiterate in the spiritual presence of Zübeyde Hanım that we will work hard to protect the trust and to fulfill our duty in the best way possible. I invite everyone to join this struggle unconditionally and again. Let us stand by the values of the Republic and Atatürk against those who try to take Turkey backwards and give this country away to someone else. Let us be the guardians of the spiritual heritage of Zübeyde Hanım and her child. Rest in peace, Zübeyde mother,” he said.
