Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the National Surveillance Radar, which was developed entirely by Turkish engineers, has successfully completed its testing processes. Minister Uraloğlu announced that they plan to put the radar system into service in the first quarter of this year following integration studies.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made statements regarding the National Surveillance Radar Mode-S SSR (MGR), which was developed entirely by Turkish engineers in cooperation with the State Airports Authority (DHMİ) and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM.
It is planned to be put into service in the first quarter of this year.
Minister Uraloğlu, who recalled that they made the final acceptance of the MGR system in December 2024, recalled that the radar settlement was established on Gaffur Baba Hill near Gaziantep Airport. Minister Uraloğlu, who reported that MGR, Turkey's first domestic and national civil surveillance radar in the field of civil aviation, successfully passed the continuity tests initiated before its commissioning, said, "We plan to put it into service in the first quarter of this year after its integration with air traffic control systems is ensured."
“It will work in an integrated manner with Air Traffic Management Software”
Underlining that the MGR system will make significant contributions to the intense air traffic of Turkish airspace, Minister Uraloğlu said, “Our radar will work in integration with the air traffic management software used by our air traffic controllers and will increase the efficiency of air traffic control services. MGR will be a milestone within the scope of our country’s domestic and national production initiative in the field of aviation.”
Can be sold to other countries
Uraloğlu underlined that MGR could be sold to other countries in the future and that it could make a significant contribution to the economy, and emphasized that Turkey would not only be a country that produces civil surveillance radars in the aviation sector, but also an exporter.
Designed in Accordance with ICAO and Eurocontrol Standards
Minister Uraloğlu underlined that the MGR was designed in accordance with ICAO and Eurocontrol standards for the detection of civil and military air traffic and noted that it consists of two surveillance systems. Uraloğlu said, “The primary surveillance system will be able to monitor up to 112 kilometers using advanced coherent radar signal processing techniques in different weather conditions, and the secondary surveillance system will be able to monitor a thousand aircraft at the same time in an area of up to 370 kilometers, 7 hours a day, 24 days a week.”
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that they will reduce external dependency in aviation systems by spreading MGR throughout Türkiye, and underlined that the entire 1 million square kilometers of Turkish airspace can be monitored with domestic and national technologies.
