'We want to be satisfied where we were born'
Speaking at the opening, Sur Municipality Co-Mayor Fatma Gulan Önkol drew attention to the fact that the Halk Restaurant is an important step in the fight against poverty and said, “Since the first day we set out, we have been acting with the motto of ‘I want to be full where I was born’. We would like to thank the Metropolitan Municipality for providing cheap, accessible, healthy and hygienic nutrition opportunities.”
DEM Party Diyarbakır Deputy Adalet Kaya also drew attention to the importance of local governments and underlined that the struggle for bread, justice and democracy can only be achieved with strong local governments.
"We have fulfilled our promise to our people"
Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Doğan Hatun stated that they fulfilled their promises in line with the demands of the people and said, “We are very happy and proud. We had made a promise to our people and we are happy to fulfill it. The economic crisis has reached serious dimensions. No one is thinking about the inside of the people's homes or the people's interests. There has not been such a famine in Diyarbakır for seven thousand years. This means that the economic policy of the government that has been ruling the country for 23 years has come to nothing. It is obvious that there is no solution to these problems. We must now find this solution within ourselves.”
Co-chair Hatun: We will expand this step
Emphasizing that they will continue to work to overcome the problems experienced by the people, Co-chair Hatun continued her words as follows: “Although our public restaurants are a small step towards this, we will make this step bigger. We hope that our people will be with us on this issue, we will come together and solve our problem together. I believe that just as the soil and water of this city have fed its people for 7 thousand years, it will feed us for another 7 thousand years. For this reason, we must strengthen our internal alliance. We promise that we will find a solution together from this perspective. The solution lies in the unity and solidarity of the people.”
Following the speeches, the co-chairs cut the ribbon and opened the restaurant. The co-chairs also served the first meal and chatted with the citizens who came to the restaurant. The co-chairs then had dinner with the citizens.
Free meals were served today to celebrate the opening.
