Shield AI's V-Bat UAV Successfully Tested in Ukraine

US-based technology firm Shield AI has shared important data on field tests it conducted in Ukraine throughout 2024. The company’s latest development, the V-Bat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), attracted attention by exhibiting superior performance in difficult combat conditions with its vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability. In particular, its resistance against Russia’s electronic warfare (EW) systems shows how this technology can create a turning point in modern warfare.

V-Bat's Success in Challenging Conditions

The V-Bat UAVs were sent to Ukraine in June 2024 and were subjected to field tests accompanied by the developers of Shield AI. During these tests, despite difficult combat conditions such as GPS and communication outages, the V-Bat UAVs successfully completed their missions. The company said in a statement, “V-Bat proved its resistance to electronic warfare in Ukraine. Demonstrating the ability to operate autonomously even in the most difficult conditions, it successfully completed long-term ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions even when GPS and communication signals were interrupted.”

Critical Missions and Achievements

V-Bat achieved significant success during its missions in Ukraine, most notably playing a critical role in detecting and targeting a Russian SA-11 Buk-M1 mobile air defense system, which was subsequently destroyed by Ukrainian forces using HIMARS missiles. This operation demonstrated V-Bat’s proficiency in ISR missions and support for precision strike operations.

Global Distribution and Usage

Shield AI announced that it has delivered approximately 250 V-Bat UAVs worldwide. The V-Bat is actively used by the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and the US Marine Corps. Additionally, the US Coast Guard will receive its first V-Bat units in 2025. The V-Bat not only replaces legacy ISR platforms, but also plays a role in the development of new UAV programs.
