Heritage Railway Comes Back to Life

North Norfolk Railway has completed significant upgrades to its infrastructure with £34.427 in funding from the Rural England Prosperity Fund. These investments have improved both the safety and efficiency of the railway, while also helping to reduce its environmental impact.

Infrastructure Improvements and Environmentally Friendly Investments

The installation of new LED lighting and the construction of a coal bunker and oil storage unit at the Weybourne Station workshops have strengthened the railway’s core infrastructure. These improvements provide a safer working environment and reduce electricity costs. In addition, the new second coal bunker aims to reduce emissions by using smokeless solid fuel storage combined with conventional coal. As well as minimising the railway’s environmental impact, this initiative also reduces fire risks.

Increased Operational Efficiency with Workforce Training

Heritage Railway has also invested in staff training with a £5.000 grant from Future Skills NOW. The training programme aims to upskill staff in areas such as woodworking, chainsaw use and abrasive wheel machinery. These investments will help team members ensure safety and efficiency in day-to-day operations, contributing to the sustainability of the business.

50th Anniversary Celebrations and Future Plans

With 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of steam services from Sheringham Station, North Norfolk Railway is planning a range of exciting events to mark the occasion. As well as daily steam services, visitors will be able to experience a range of other things including special events and dinner trains. Long-Term Sustainability and Historic Preservation

These investments, made by Heritage Railway with support from the Rural England Prosperity Fund and Shared Prosperity Fund, are strengthening the historic railway to meet modern challenges, while boosting rural productivity and ensuring the railway’s long-term sustainability. These projects combine heritage protection and environmentally friendly solutions to deliver a more sustainable transport alternative for future generations.
