Digital Equality in Older Age Symposium Held in Izmir

At the “Digital Equality in Advanced Age Symposium” held in collaboration with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Izmir City Council and Aegean Geriatrics Association, the challenges faced by elderly individuals in the digitalized world within the framework of digital equality and rights were discussed. The “Advanced Age Action Plan” of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality was also discussed at the meeting.

The “Digital Equality in Advanced Ages Symposium” was held in collaboration with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Izmir City Council and the Aegean Geriatrics Association, moderated by Mevlüt Ülgen, facilitator of the Izmir City Council Healthy Aging and Elderly Policies Working Group. The symposium, which was held at the Historical Gas Factory Cultural Center with a high level of participation, discussed the challenges that older individuals face in the digitalized world within the framework of digital equality and rights.

Digitalization and age-friendly solutions

Symposium Co-Chair Prof. Dr. Sevnaz Şahin drew attention to the rapid increase in the elderly population in the world and in Turkey, and stated that healthy aging is possible with an active lifestyle. Şahin stated that although technological developments increase the quality of life, they create adaptation and access problems for older individuals, and emphasized the importance of digital equality and literacy.
Dr. Ahmet Soner Emre, Head of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Community Health, stated that Izmir is a city with a large elderly population and that age-friendly digital solutions and egalitarian practices should be developed. He stated that Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is focusing on digital literacy and awareness studies within the framework of the “Older Age Action Plan”.

Digital Bridge Between Generations

Izmir City Council President and lawyer Nilay Kökkılınç, drew attention to the fact that technology is rapidly changing communication between generations and said, “We must build bridges that will bring together the knowledge of the youth and the experiences of the elderly.” Kökkılınç emphasized that steps should be taken towards digital equality with digital workshops and municipality-supported projects.

The event began with a concert by the Aegean 3rd Age University Friendship Choir and ended with a certificate ceremony presented by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay at the end of the scientific sessions. The symposium aimed to raise awareness of digital solutions that will increase the quality of life of elderly individuals.
