Alstom Appoints Rob Whyte as Managing Director for UK and Ireland

Alstom continues to strengthen its global leadership in smart and sustainable mobility. The company has announced the appointment of Rob Whyte as General Manager for the UK and Ireland. Whyte began his career at Alstom three decades ago as General Manager in Scandinavia and is committed to building on the company’s legacy of innovation and excellence in the rail industry in his new role in the UK and Ireland.

Rob Whyte's Career Journey

Rob Whyte joined Alstom in the early 1990s as an apprentice in Transmission and Distribution (T&D). He continued in this role while studying engineering at the University of Bath. He left Alstom in 2003 to work for Angel Trains, where he was responsible for the leasing of rail assets. He then set up his own business and returned to Alstom in 2008. He became General Manager of the Regional and Intercity fleet, one of the most important roles in the UK. He led Alstom’s successful bids for the Nottingham Express Transit and Crossrail projects in London.

Promoted to General Manager of Nordics in 2016, Whyte has driven growth in the region and led the completion of significant projects.

His Goals in His New Position

Rob Whyte said they will continue to transform the transport sector in the UK and Ireland, adding: “Together, we will continue to deliver efficient, low-carbon solutions that transform transport across the UK and Ireland and beyond.”

Alstom's Forward-Looking Investments

Gian Luca Erbacci, President of Alstom’s Europe Region, said Whyte’s appointment underscores Alstom’s commitment to developing talent and investing in the regions where it operates. Whyte’s deep industry knowledge and leadership background will enable the company to continue to grow and deliver transformative projects.

Andy Butters' New Mission

Alstom has also announced the appointment of Andy Butters as General Manager of Rolling Stock and Components for the UK and Ireland. Butters will oversee the production of new trains at Alstom’s historic Litchurch Lane Works site in Derby, which symbolises Britain’s railway heritage and plays a key role as the hub for modern train production.

Andy Butters began his career in rail in 2008 as Project Engineering Manager on Alstom’s Turbostar fleet. He gained significant experience by managing the delivery of the Aventra Class 2019 fleet in 730 and was subsequently promoted to Field Projects Director.

Alstom’s new leadership appointments in the UK and Ireland aim to strengthen the company’s regional growth and transformation ambitions in the rail sector.
