
The General Directorate of Meteorology, affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, published the temperature and precipitation reports for 2024. With an average temperature of 2024 degrees, 15,6 went down in history as the 'warmest year' of the last 53 years. The General Directorate of Meteorology has completed the 220 Temperature Assessment report by comparing temperature data from 2024 stations with long-term average data. According to the data, Turkey's average temperature in 2024 was 15,6 degrees. This value was 1991 degrees above the 2020-13,9 normal average of 1,7 degrees. When the 2024-1971 period is considered, Turkey's average temperature in 2024 went down in history as the hottest year with 15,6 degrees. This value was 2010 degrees above the previous record of 15,5 degrees set in 0,1.
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WERE REALIZED FOR 37 DAYS OF THE YEAR
When we look at the years 2007 to the present, Turkey has had above-normal average temperatures, except for 2011. In 2024, average temperatures were around normal for 1 days, with 328 day below normal, and 37 days above normal.
RECORDS WERE SEEN IN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE LAST 4 MONTHS
Average temperature records were broken in January, April, June and July of 2024. When looked at seasonally, winter and summer seasons were completed with records again. When looked at the whole of 2024, while average temperature values were above normal in 10 months, average temperature values were observed below normal only in May and November.
6,3 PERCENT DECREASE IN RAINFALL
According to the 2024 Turkey Areal Annual Rainfall Assessment Report of the General Directorate of Meteorology, there was a 2024 percent decrease in precipitation compared to normal in Turkey in 6,3. When looked at regionally, there was a decrease in precipitation compared to normal in all regions except the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia regions.
THE LARGEST DECREASE IN RAINFALL IS IN THE AEGEAN
While the largest decrease in precipitation in 2024 was seen in the Aegean Region with 22,4 percent, a 7,5 percent increase compared to normal was measured in the Eastern Anatolia Region. In the Black Sea Region, precipitation was around normal.
RIZE RECEIVED THE HIGHEST RAIN, EDIRNE RECEIVED THE LEAST RAIN
In 2024, precipitation decreased compared to normal in the three major provinces of Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. The province with the most precipitation in 2024 was Rize with 1869,9 mm, which was approximately 17 percent above normal. The largest decrease in precipitation compared to long-term averages occurred in Edirne with 35 percent.
RAINFALL DATA BY YEAR
In the evaluation made by the General Directorate of Meteorology looking at the data between 1991-2024, it was seen that the highest annual total precipitation in Turkey occurred in 728,3 with 2009 mm, and the lowest precipitation occurred in 451,6 with 2008 mm. The total annual precipitation in Turkey in 2024 was measured as 537,2 mm. Again in the 33-year period; the highest increase in annual precipitation average compared to normal occurred in 27 with 2009 percent, and the highest decrease occurred in 21 with 2008 percent. In 2024, the total annual precipitation in Turkey was measured 6 percent below normal.
