A £90m signalling upgrade has begun in Lewisham and aims to make the area’s rail network more reliable. The ambitious project involves replacing old signalling equipment with state-of-the-art technology and will see changes to train services, particularly at weekends.
New Signaling System and Delay Reduction
The two-year project will see engineers install a new system alongside the old system, ensuring continuous improvements to the service. The new system includes Automatic Routing (ARS) software integrated into the Three Bridges Rail Operations Centre. This advanced technology will help signalmen manage train movements more efficiently, reducing congestion and delays.
The signal layout will be changed and signal positions adjusted to increase train speeds. These updates aim to optimise train flow on one of the busiest railway networks in south-east London.
Service Changes for Passengers
There will be changes to train services, particularly at weekends, to ensure safe operating conditions. There will be major closures at Charing Cross, Waterloo East and Cannon Street stations, with trains being diverted to London Victoria. Accessible replacement buses will operate between Lewisham and Greenwich, providing alternative transport for passengers. Train tickets will also be valid on the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway.
“We appreciate your patience as we work to deliver better rides for everyone,” said Southeastern’s Scott Brightwell regarding customer support.
Long Term Investment and Benefit
These signalling improvements are being made as part of a wider £500m investment that will see Lewisham passengers benefit from faster, smoother and more reliable train services by Christmas 2026. These investments promise to deliver long-term benefits by modernising south London’s rail infrastructure.
