Minister Uraloğlu stated that 65,7 percent of the population uses social media and said, "In our country, users spend 2 hours and 37 minutes on social media. There are 303 million 97 thousand active accounts from Turkey on social media platforms."
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu evaluated the Digital 2024 October Global Statistics Report prepared by We Are Social and Meltwater. Uraloğlu stated that the world population reached 2024 billion in the third quarter of 3. Uraloğlu said, “According to the report published on digital media statistics, the number of internet users worldwide reached 8,18 billion, while the internet usage rate by population was 5,52 percent. In our country, this rate was 67,5 percent, well above the world average.”
Türkiye Spends 6 Hours and 51 Minutes a Day on the Internet
Minister Uraloğlu, who noted that according to the information in the report, the number of social media users worldwide is 5,22 billion and the ratio of this number to the population is 63,8 percent, said, “In Turkey, active social media users correspond to 65,7 percent of our population. We see that 86,5 percent of these people have adopted the internet, and the time spent on the internet in our country is 6 hours and 51 minutes; approximately 7 hours. The number of active accounts on social media platforms is 303 million 97 thousand.”
Time Allocated to Social Media: 2 Hours 37 Minutes
Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that internet users in the world spend 2 hours and 19 minutes on social media, and in Turkey, an average of 2 hours and 37 minutes per day, said, “While social media users worldwide use an average of 6,8 social media platforms monthly, this rate is 7,5 in our country. According to the data in the report, we see that the social media platform with the most users worldwide is Facebook with 3,07 billion. The application where the most time was spent in the first quarter worldwide was TikTok with 34 hours and 15 minutes, while this period was 30 hours and 39 minutes in Turkey.”
Interest in Popular Media Platforms Has Diminished
Minister Uraloğlu noted that the number of users of popular social media applications in Turkey decreased compared to the previous year, and stated that the biggest decrease was on the X platform. He shared the following information:
“In 2023, the number of users of the X platform in Turkey, which had 22,7 million members, decreased by 14,2 percent to 19,5 million. Similarly, the number of Instagram users decreased by 5 percent compared to the previous year to 53,8 million, and the number of Facebook users decreased by 1,3 percent to 34,3 million. On the other hand, the number of users on TikTok increased by 9,3 percent compared to the previous year to 39 million.”
Instagram Ads Reach 18 Percent of Population Over 82,8 in Turkey
Providing information about the social media advertising statistics included in the report, Minister Uraloğlu said, “While the ratio of Instagram users over the age of 18 who can be reached through Instagram ads to the total population aged 18 and over is 28,1 percent worldwide, this ratio has reached 82,8 percent in Turkey, making it the country with the highest ratio in this regard.” Noting that the number of mobile phone users in the world is 5,75 billion according to the report, Uraloğlu said, “The average monthly smartphone cellular data traffic in the world is 20,3 GB.”
57,9 Percent of Internet Users in Turkey Shop Online
Minister Uraloğlu stated that the most visited website in the world is Google, and said, “When we look at purchasing habits on the internet, while the rate of internet users aged 16 and over who buy something online every week is 55,2 percent worldwide, this rate is 57,9 percent in Turkey. When we look at digital content purchases, the rate of purchases made by these users every month is 65,9 percent in the world, while this rate is 65,4 percent in Turkey.”
12,1 Percent Use Mobile Payments
When looking at financial statistics, Minister Uraloğlu stated that while the percentage of internet users aged 16 and over who use banking, investment, insurance websites or applications every month is 38,1 percent worldwide, this rate is 36,1 percent in Turkey. He said, “While the percentage of internet users aged 16 and over who use mobile payment services every month is 23,7 percent worldwide, this rate is 12,1 percent in Turkey.” Noting that the primary channel used for online brand research in digital marketing data is search engines with 32,9 percent, followed by TV ads with 32,8 percent, Uraloğlu said, “While 32,3 percent of internet users worldwide use ad-blocking applications, this rate is 30,9 percent in Turkey.”
