Minister Uraloğlu: Locomotives Are Being Monitored 7/24 with Artificial Intelligence

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu reported that locomotives are monitored 7/24 with artificial intelligence-supported applications and tracking software. Emphasizing that possible negative situations are automatically detected by the system, Minister Uraloğlu said, “Thanks to artificial intelligence-supported applications, we have achieved a 2023 percent improvement in accident rates compared to 9,4.”

Uraloğlu made statements about the Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD) Train Monitoring and Coordination Center. Reminding that they opened the center, which is an important part of the digital transformation in railway transportation, in 2023, Minister Uraloğlu said, “The data obtained from the cameras placed on the locomotives is monitored in real time 7/24 with artificial intelligence-supported applications and tracking software in our Train Monitoring and Coordination Center. In this way, negative situations caused by humans are automatically detected by the system and an alarm is activated.”

66 Percent Improvement in Train Delays

Underlining that the commissioning of the Train Monitoring and Coordination Center has significantly reduced daily train delays, Minister Uraloğlu said, “We access the qualified data and information sources we need while conducting train operations by using digital technologies. We track train operating data in real time with our own tracking software and significantly reduce train delays by intervening in unplanned delays and negative situations.” Emphasizing that a 66 percent improvement has been achieved in freight train delays thanks to artificial intelligence-supported applications used in railway transportation, Uraloğlu said, “Thanks to our efficient management, we have reduced unplanned freight train operations from 27 percent to 8 percent. In this way, we have achieved a labor savings of 40 locomotives and 350 machinists.”

Improvement Achieved in Railway Accidents

Minister Uraloğlu, emphasizing that the safety of train navigation has increased thanks to the cameras installed on the locomotives, said, “We are closely following every development that will raise our railway train operations above world standards. We are also constantly updating our legislation to follow modern technologies. We approach safety with a holistic approach and continue our operations without the slightest compromise. We clearly observe the positive reflections of these efforts. With both the work carried out in the field of safety and artificial intelligence-supported applications and software, we have achieved a 2021 percent improvement in railway transportation accident rates compared to 39,2, a 2022 percent improvement compared to 25,6, and a 2023 percent improvement compared to 9,4.”
