LTG Cargo Switches to Green Transportation with Electric Locomotives

LTG Cargo has taken an important step towards increasing environmentally friendly and sustainable freight transport across Lithuania by purchasing 17 electric locomotives. The €115,66 million project covers locomotives, spare parts and maintenance for the first three years and allows for the production of 17 additional locomotives if required.

Advantages of Electric Locomotives

LTG Cargo CEO Egle Šimė said that electric locomotives offer many advantages over diesel locomotives. They offer customers more cost-effective and sustainable freight transport solutions while reducing carbon emissions. Electric locomotives optimize energy consumption according to load weight, eliminating the need for refueling, thus reducing downtimes and increasing operational reliability.

Zero Carbon Emissions and Energy Efficiency

Electric locomotives are directly connected to the contact network, providing zero direct carbon emissions. LTG Cargo uses energy regeneration technology to increase operational efficiency. LTG Cargo Technology Manager Audrius Pukas emphasized that braking energy will be returned to the grid, and stated that this innovation will reduce operational costs and increase sustainability.

Performance and Delivery Process of New Locomotives

The newly acquired electric locomotives offer stronger performance compared to diesel locomotives and can pull trains weighing up to 5.700 tonnes. First deliveries are planned for early 2027.

Vilnius-Klaipėda Electrification Project and Sustainable Logistics

The electrification project of the Vilnius-Klaipėda route will be completed by the end of 2025 and will contribute to reducing annual CO₂ emissions by 150.000 tonnes. The project will electrify 28% of the Lithuanian railway network, strengthening LTG Cargo’s leading role in green transport innovation. The Vilnius-Klaipėda corridor carries 50% of Lithuania’s rail freight and is critical for sustainable logistics.

LTG Cargo continues to offer its customers more efficient and sustainable freight transportation services by investing in environmentally friendly technologies.
