Dredging Works Started in Izmir Bay

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality IZSU General Directorate has started the bottom dredging works that will play an important role in cleaning the sea by providing circulation in Izmir Bay. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay started the work in which 700 thousand cubic meters of bottom mud will be dredged in the first stage in the region covering Peynircioğlu Creek and the northern axis of the Bay.

Tugay, who set out from Bostanlı to the Gulf and went to the area where the dredging ship is located, said, “Our cleaning work will continue with two dredging ships and 6 ships carrying the mud. This work will provide circulation in the Gulf. It is a job that the ministry should do, but it is not important. The Gulf is our Gulf. We will continue our work with all our units until the Gulf is cleaned.”

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has accelerated its efforts to address the pollution problem in Izmir Bay. After the Izmir Bay Workshop, IZSU General Directorate, which evaluated the various opinions of experts, academics and bureaucrats regarding the cleaning and protection of the Bay, also took action after receiving permissions from the relevant ministries and started dredging operations in the Bay. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, who opened up to the Bay, received information from IZSU General Director Gürkan Erdoğan and institution officials. In the first stage, a total of 100 thousand cubic meters of dredging will be carried out, approximately 600 thousand m³ in Peynircioğlu Creek and approximately 700 thousand m³ in the Çiğli section. IZSU General Directorate will carry out these operations with an investment of 440 million liras.

The Gulf is our Gulf

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, who stated that they started a cleaning campaign regarding the pollution of the Gulf, which İzmir has been talking about for a long time, said, “The Gulf needs bottom cleaning. A bottom cleaning is needed for the water to be cleaned. We have been struggling with the waste coming to the Gulf from the streams for a very long time. Mud and garbage also come. These are the elements that have accumulated in the Gulf throughout the history of İzmir. This prevents the Gulf from being cleaned. Today, we are cleaning the bottom at the point where Peynircioğlu Stream meets the Gulf. In the following days, we will carry out our work to ensure that there is a current in other parts. Permission was granted by İzmir Port Authority yesterday evening for our ship that started working today. We started our work as of 09.00:6 today. Our cleaning work will continue with two dredging ships and XNUMX ships carrying the mud. This work will provide circulation in the Gulf. It will also prevent an algae bloom. These works we have done were actually a job that the Ministry should have done. But it does not matter. "If the ministry does not see this situation, there is nothing we can do. The Gulf is our Gulf. We will continue our work with all our units until the Gulf is cleaned. Our first goal is to have no algae blooms and no odor in the Gulf," he said.

All our work will contribute to the Gulf

President Dr. Tugay, who stated that they have implemented many projects that will affect the Gulf cleaning works, said, “Our Çiğli 4th Phase works continue. We will complete it in April. Not content with this, we will also carry out the 5th phase. We are carrying out our rain and channel separation works with new tenders. This year, we will carry out our most difficult first 41-kilometer rain water separation in the city center. We think that all the works we do will make a great contribution to the Gulf. For us, this is the subject we work on the most. Especially our citizens of İzmir should support this effort. Rain water drains must be kept clean. Streams must not be polluted. The duty of keeping the Gulf clean belongs to every İzmir resident. I expect this sensitivity from all our citizens. The Gulf is our honor, the apple of our eye. I would like to thank our colleagues very much.”

How will the process work?

The work will be carried out in two stages. In the first 180 days, approximately 100 thousand m³ in Peynircioğlu Creek and approximately 600 thousand m³ in Çiğli, totaling 700 thousand cubic meters of dredging will be carried out urgently. The cost of the 700 thousand cubic meter dredging work will be 440 million liras. However, in the remaining second stage, a tender will be put out in 1 for the dredging of 800 million 2025 thousand cubic meters of bottom mud. Thus, İZSU General Directorate will carry out dredging of 2 million 500 thousand cubic meters in İzmir Bay.

Dredging works in the gulf and river mouth will improve the water quality in the gulf, and the current speed and pollution of the gulf will decrease by removing the bottom dredging material from the terrestrial points of the gulf, which has reached depths of 20 cm.
