Zero Emission Locomotive Era at the Port of Los Angeles

Pacific Harbour Line (PHL) ve California Air Resources Board (CARB) The project, carried out in collaboration with Improving air quality in the Los Angeles-Long Beach port area ve reduce emissions It includes the commissioning of five zero-emission (ZE) locomotives. EMD Joule battery powered electric locomotive After a successful one-year trial period, positive feedback has been received for this environmental initiative.

Basic Details of the Project

Funding and Contributions

  • Total Project Cost: 34,2 million dollars.
  • PHL's Contribution: 6,37 million dollars.
  • Aim: Installation of five zero-emission locomotives and two charging stations.

In addition, three locomotives Sacramento, Imperial and San Bernardino will operate in cities.

EMD Joule Electric Locomotive and Environmental Benefits

Performance and Trials

  • Trial Process: The EMD Joule electric locomotive was successfully tested for one year.
  • Producer: USA based Progress Railwill be responsible for the production of advanced ZE locomotives.

Environmental Impacts

  • Reduced Emissions:
    • Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions per year 17 ton reduction.
    • Particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions per year 500 pound reduction.
    • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year 459 metric tons reduction.

These reductions will significantly reduce environmental impacts in the busy port area and contribute to California meeting its ambitious air quality goals.

Social and Economic Benefits

Gains for Disadvantaged Communities

Communities surrounding the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex have been exposed to high levels of pollution for many years. This project is particularly useful for these disadvantaged communities who are experiencing negative health impacts:

  • It will alleviate health burdens by improving air quality,
  • It will increase living standards.

Environmental Leadership of Ports

America's busiest port complex Ports of Los Angeles and Long BeachWith this project, they will strengthen their environmental leadership position and play a leading role in the transition to sustainable port operations.

California's Future: Cleaner, Sustainable Rail Systems

This zero-emission locomotive project is California’s:

  1. Supporting the goal of transitioning to environmentally friendly transportation,
  2. Accelerating the development of sustainable rail infrastructure,
  3. It will enable it to reach a leading position in global environmental standards.

 Environmental and Economic Transformation

The zero-emission locomotive project, implemented in collaboration with Pacific Harbor Line and CARB, is a significant milestone in terms of environmental sustainability and social benefit. This innovative initiative in the Los Angeles-Long Beach port area will play a critical role in helping California meet its clean energy goals.

With this project, PHL sets a strong example not only as a railway company, but also in environmental leadership and social responsibility. California’s vision for building a cleaner future will continue to take shape through projects like these.
