India's First Hydrogen Fuel Train to Hit the Roads by the End of 2024

Indian Railways is taking the first step towards hydrogen-fuelled trains, one of the ambitious projects that aims to achieve the target of “net zero carbon emissions” by 2030. The first prototype hydrogen-fuelled train is scheduled to be operational on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana in the Northern Railway zone in December 2024. This step stands out as a significant development towards India’s transition to a green transportation system.

“Hydrogen for Heritage” Project

The hydrogen trains are being developed as part of the Indian Railways’ comprehensive ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ project. Under the project, 35 hydrogen-fuelled trains are planned to be put into operation on heritage routes and hilly terrains. These trains will have the capacity to produce zero emissions using completely environment-friendly fuel. This initiative will help Indian Railways achieve its goals of environmental protection and sustainable transportation.

Environmentally Friendly Technologies and Energy Efficiency

Along with hydrogen trains, Indian Railways aims to increase energy efficiency with other environmental projects. The HOG (Head on Generation) technology and LED lighting used in the train are among other innovative solutions that support energy efficiency. In addition, the installation of solar power plants in railway stations and rail lines will also ensure greater use of sustainable energy sources.

Budget and Investments

The Indian government has allocated a huge budget for the hydrogen fuel train project. In the 2024 budget, 35 crore rupees (approximately $2800 million) has been allocated for the construction of 335 hydrogen trains. A contract worth 111,83 crore rupees has also been signed for hydrogen-powered diesel-fuelled DEMU trains.

India's Green Future

Hydrogen-fuelled trains have an important place in India’s green transportation strategy. These projects will not only provide environmentally friendly solutions but will also contribute to India pioneering green transportation technologies.
