Aslıhan Turna's Educational Journey
Living in the city, Aslıhan Turna got married at the age of 19 and experienced motherhood at the age of 20. She had to take a break from her education during this period. Her son, who graduated from Istanbul University International Trade Department in 2010, and her daughter, who graduated from Özyeğin University Faculty of Law in 2016, were the triggers for Aslıhan Turna to return to her education. Turna, who took the university entrance exam at the age of 45, won the Ceramics and Glass Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Fine Arts. She achieved great success by ranking first in her first year and completed her second university education by completing a double major in the Painting Department at the same university.
Turna, who successfully completed the Pedagogical Formation program, is currently doing her master's degree in Painting. “I Always Had a Feeling of Regret” She emphasized that she continued her unfinished university education after a 25-year break. Turna said, “I got married at an early age, at 19, and became a mother at 20. I left my education life unfinished during that period. I was studying nursing. I always had a dream of graduating from university. After both of my children graduated from university at the age of 45, I took the exams and passed. I studied at OMÜ Fine Arts Ceramics and Glass Department. I ranked first in the department in the first year. When I ranked first, I earned the right to do a double major. I did a double major in the painting department and graduated from that too. In the meantime, I completed my 'Pedagogical Formation' in order to practice the teaching profession. I am currently doing my master's degree in the painting department. I am currently in the thesis writing phase. Hopefully, I will finish that too.”
Wants to Inspire Young People
Aslıhan Turna stated that the goal of this new journey in her education is to transfer what she has learned through teaching to the younger generations. “Before my university life, I had a jeweler’s education. I have done many works in the field of painting and participated in various exhibitions. I graduated from two departments and completed my ‘Pedagogical Formation’. Now I want to be an example to the youth. I want to share and teach everything I have learned in some way. My goal is to be a teacher,” she said.
Turna, who stated that she made the plaster stained glass of the window of a 250-year-old historical house in the Boyabat district of Sinop in her graduation project, said, “This was my graduation project from the Ceramic Glass Department. Since the pandemic coincided with the last year of graduation, I saw on the internet that the Samsun Chamber of Architects organized a trip to the Latife Matuk House in the Boyabat district of Sinop. I noticed that the skylight of the house was also plaster stained glass. Later, with the help of my advisor, I obtained permissions from the necessary places and inspected the house. I took photos of the skylights and took their measurements. The house was in a pretty bad state. When I returned to Samsun, I started working on the project. I made a survey and completed my graduation project by making the exact plaster stained glass of the window. I presented it as a report and exhibition during graduation and it attracted a lot of attention.”
