Douro Historical Train Trips Begin in Portugal

From June to October, the Douro Historic Train will make 51 trips. Passengers on board a CP train consisting of a 1925 steam locomotive and five historic carriages built between 1908 and 1934, traveling 36 kilometers between Régua and Tua stations (round trip, with a stop in Pinhão), on the iconic Douro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They take an authentic journey through time with the view of the landscape.

In this 2024 season and given the growing interest and demand for this different and historical experience, CP — Comboios de Portugal has decided to increase the number of trips made. In total, 15 circulations are planned to be held between June and October on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, as well as on August 51 holidays. The first trip was on June 15th and the last will be on October 27th.

“Aiming to value this region and promote local products and enrich the rail tourism service, Alijó carries history, culture and emotions in partnership with the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães and Peso da Régua,” CP says in a press release.

The program starts 30 minutes before departure with the offer of a glass of Port wine – “Porto Ferreira” at Régua, water and desserts from Régua. On every cruise, there will be typical desserts from the region as well as regional entertainment on board.

Also, both on the way and on the way back, a stop at Pinhão station, where participants have the opportunity to watch the steam locomotive water supply and admire the famous tile panels decorating the walls of the station, as well as visiting a “Wine House” and buying typical products from the region will be. At Tua station, there is time to relax, admire the view and visit the site while the steam locomotive performs its reversing maneuvers.

Departures from Régua, with a capacity of 254 passengers, at 15:30, arriving in Tua at 16:40 (with a stop in Pinhão). On the way back, it leaves Tua at 18.26 (with a stop in Pinhão) to arrive at Régua station at 17.08. Adults pay 54 euros, children pay 28 euros. There are special prices for groups.
