96 people lost their lives and more than 26 people are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Mozambique.
According to local media sources, authorities in Mozambique's Nampula province said they believed there were about 130 people on the boat and five people were rescued.
According to Nampula Province Governor Jaime Neto, the boat sank because there were too many people on the boat at the same time. Jaime Neto told the BBC that people were trying to escape the cholera epidemic and most of those on the boat were children.
The province is among the places hardest hit by the cholera epidemic that has spread to many countries in Southern Africa since January last year, and the current outbreak is the worst in 25 years, according to UNICEF.
Since October 2023, more than 13.700 cholera cases have been seen in Mozambique and 30 people have died.
