Porto's Pink Line Will Be More Environmentally Friendly with Alstom's Technology!

Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has won the contract with Metro do Porto to supply signaling, safety and control systems for the Metro Porto new pink line. Alstom will develop and equip the new line with the Cityflo 250 signaling system, including state-of-the-art interlocking that will allow real-time monitoring of vehicles. The engineering, installation and commissioning of the system will be developed at Alstom's facility in Maia, in the Porto region.

This first section of the pink line, which is 3 kilometers long and has 4 metro stations, will facilitate access to the center of Porto by connecting S. Bento and Glorieta de Boavista. Following opening, demand is expected to increase by more than 30 million passengers in the first year of operation. It will significantly reduce private vehicle use, thus reducing traffic congestion and preventing approximately 1.500 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Metro de Porto aims to continue expanding the pink line, ultimately creating a circular route connecting to the entire Metro network.

“It is a great honor for Alstom to partner again with Metro do Porto to improve the mobility of citizens and tourists in Porto. We will develop this project from our engineering facilities in Maia, where we lead signaling projects and digital mobility technologies for the Portuguese. and the international market,” said David Torres, Alstom's Managing Director in Portugal. “This project is a testament to our commitment to promoting sustainable mobility in Portugal.”

Metro do Porto is the light rail system of the city of Porto, covering approximately 78 km of rail and sub-tracks and welcoming approximately 70 million passengers every year. Alstom has supplied the network with the 102 trains already in service, as well as on-board signaling systems. Alstom continues to support the growth of Metro do Porto by providing the onboard ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system for the 18 new trains added to the fleet.

Alstom has had a presence in Portugal for over 30 years and two out of three trains currently operating in Portugal are produced by Alstom or with Alstom technology, including high-speed, regional, metro and tram trains. Additionally, more than 1.500 km of the Portuguese rail network and more than 500 in-car units are managed by Alstom's ATP system, a signaling solution developed specifically for the Portuguese market. Alstom inspected Metro do Porto's signaling system and the fleet of 102 trains currently operating on this network.

A strong leader in the public transport market with more than 30 years of expertise in communication-based train control (CBTC) and more than 32 metro lines equipped in more than 190 countries.
