Üsküdar Dental Hospital Prosthetic Dentistry Specialist Prof. Dr. İbrahim Berk Bellaz talked about zirconium coating, which is a dental coating method used in dentistry for aesthetics and durability.
Stating that zirconium provides an appearance close to natural tooth color, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Berk Bellaz said, “For this reason, it is an aesthetically preferred coating method, especially for the front teeth. “Zirconium coating can be used to correct the shape, size and color of teeth.” said.
Stating that it has some features that differ from other dental coating methods, Prof. Dr. Bellaz listed these features as follows:
“Zirconium provides an aesthetic appearance because it is similar to natural tooth color. It can help achieve a more natural and aesthetic result than metal-supported veneers such as porcelain veneers. Thanks to the translucency feature of zirconium coatings, light can pass through the tooth. “This helps the veneers provide an appearance closer to the natural tooth.”
It can help reduce the risk of allergic reactions and prevent gum recession.
Prof. stated that, unlike metal-supported coatings, zirconium coatings can help reduce the risk of allergic reactions and prevent aesthetic problems such as gum recession. Dr. İbrahim Berk Bellaz also stated that since zirconium is a material with high durability, teeth can better resist chewing forces. On the other hand, reminding that zirconium coatings are a material compatible with the human body, Prof. Dr. Bellaz said it is generally biocompatible.
Age, tooth structure and general health factors can affect the zirconium coating decision.
Prof. stated that zirconium coating is recommended considering the patients' personal needs, tooth structure, age and general health condition. Dr. İbrahim Berk Bellaz explained some situations in which zirconium coatings are generally recommended as follows:
“Aesthetic problems such as discoloration, stains, cracks or deformities, especially seen in the front teeth, may be a reason for zirconium coating. Decayed or damaged teeth can be renewed with zirconium coating. Veneers provide both aesthetic correction and can restore the function of the tooth. Old and large fillings may become damaged over time. In this case, zirconium coating can help cover the tooth more firmly. Problems related to the size, shape or alignment of the teeth can be corrected with zirconium coatings and a more aesthetic appearance can be achieved. "Zirconium coatings can be used in patients with young and healthy tooth structure to protect their teeth for a longer time."
Pointing out that age, tooth structure and general health factors may affect the zirconium coating decision, Prof. Dr. Bellaz said, “In elderly patients, the gums may be thinner and this may not be suitable for zirconium coating. “In addition, underlying gum problems or problems in the jaw structure may also affect the treatment plan.” He warned and emphasized that the most appropriate treatment option should be determined by specialist dentists with a personalized approach.
