The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Fisheries and Fisheries, is implementing an important project to preserve and transfer these values of Turkey, which has a rich aquatic biodiversity in the world, to future generations. Within the scope of the project, necessary measures will be taken for the continuation of rich aquatic life by creating a "Red List" regarding the fish in our seas and inland waters, their biological characteristics, habitats and reserves.
In the workshop held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Antalya Mediterranean Fisheries Research, Production and Training Institute, the studies to be carried out to ensure the continuation of the species diversity of freshwater and marine fish were discussed.
In addition to the officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, expert researchers from universities and scientists came together at the meeting to evaluate the freshwater and marine fishes of our country on the IUCN (World Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) Red List.
In the light of these evaluations, the distribution of fish in our country, whether they are threatened and/or endangered for the continuation of their generation will be determined, and the pressures on the biodiversity of the species will be discussed.
With the study, it is also aimed to create up-to-date species lists of freshwater basins consisting of streams, lakes and ponds and fish species living in our seas.
Considering that there are over 530 marine and around 400 freshwater fish species in our country, a comprehensive study is envisaged for this.
Within the scope of the project, it is also aimed to create the most up-to-date data on invasive fish species in our country's seas, where migration of foreign species has been observed for many years. In this context, it is planned to create a list of invasive species in our country's waters.
The Ministry's project to create a Red List, which will include marine and freshwater fish species, is of critical importance at the national and international level in terms of protecting our species and maintaining biodiversity.
On the other hand, with the preparation of a list of invasive species, it is aimed to prevent the possible damage of these species to the country's economy and biodiversity.
