Russia and Nicaragua signed a cooperation agreement on non-energy use of nuclear technology. Russia and Nicaragua signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of non-energy use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Within the framework of the agreement signed during the meeting between Aleksey Likhachev, General Director of the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, and Denis Moncada, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, the parties decided to cooperate in various fields, especially medicine and agriculture.

The agreement sets a precedent in that it allows Nicaragua to develop projects in non-energy uses of nuclear energy, drawing on Russia's unique experience in energy.

In his statement on the subject, Rosatom General Manager Aleksey Likhachev said: “Although more than 40 intergovernmental agreements have been signed with many countries before, this agreement has a different feature from the others. During the meeting with our partners for the first time, we agreed on the non-energy use of nuclear technologies. We are talking about projects such as a nuclear medicine center, a multi-purpose radiation center, and a sub-critical facility that can be used for education and research purposes.”

Russia will support Nicaragua in the development and implementation of projects related to the use of nuclear and radiation technologies in fields such as agriculture, health and scientific research.
