First Cyber Report of 2023 from STM 'Hackers Use ChatGPT in Cyber Attacks'

Turkey's first technology-oriented think tank “STM ThinkTech” operating under STM, which has undersigned important projects in the field of cyber security in Turkey, has announced its Cyber Threat Status Report, which includes the dates January-March 2023. In the report prepared by STM's cyber security experts, 8 different topics were discussed, mainly phishing traps made by taking advantage of the earthquake in February, the use of ChatGPT in cyber attacks, and cyber security in drones.

Earthquake Donations Become the Target of Hackers

In the report, it was stated that cyber attackers were trying to raise money by making similar sites that collect donations to help earthquake victims and phishing using interfaces similar to official donation sites. The report also underlined the need to pay attention to control the security of websites, while underlining the awareness of cyber-attackers who likened their names to official institutions such as AFAD, Kızılay and non-governmental organizations such as AHBAP and TOG Foundation in order to increase credibility.

ChatGPT is Used in Cyber Attacks

The size of ChatGPT, which is the fastest growing application in the internet history, in the field of cyber security was also analyzed in the report. While users continue to discover the capabilities of ChatGPT, which reached 45 million daily visitors in February, many cybersecurity experts expressed their concerns about the potential harmful uses of this technology.

In the report, it was noted that cyber attackers produced successful phishing e-mail templates that were difficult to distinguish through ChatGPT, and Chat-GPT was also used for disinformation purposes, with its performance in automatic text generation. It was also emphasized that the application, by producing executable codes in various programming languages, causes even people who do not have cybersecurity experience to create malicious software, thus lowering the threshold for cybercrime.

New Target of Cyber Attacks: Drones

Another topic covered in the report was tactical mini-uav systems and cyber security of drones, which are among the important fields of activity of STM. It was emphasized that with methods such as "Wifi Jamming", hackers could take advantage of a possible security vulnerability and seize control by injecting malware into drones. In addition, the report also specified which methods should be followed to prevent these attacks.

The Most Cyber Attacks From Russia

The data collected by STM's own Honeypot sensors also revealed which countries are performing the most cyber attacks around the world. Among the 2023 million 4 thousand attacks reflected on Honeypot sensors during January, February and March of 365, Russia took the lead with 481 thousand attacks, while the Netherlands took the second place with 394 thousand attacks. These countries are respectively; The USA, China, India, Vietnam, Germany, Turkey, Romania and South Korea followed.
