IMM's First Earthquake Science Board Report Has Been Published!

The first earthquake science board report of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has been published. İBB President, whose words are included in the report Ekrem İmamoğluurged the government to work together.

The 'Earthquake Science Board' at the IMM Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) convened for the first time on 15 February. The Board held several meetings until February 25. Logistics, engineering, urbanism and architecture, social health, economic, administrative and legal dimensions of the earthquake were discussed at the meetings.

More than 200 people from the sectors and academia, such as Övgün Ahmet Ercan, Celal Şengör, Naci Görür and Okan Tüysüz, from the fields of energy, informatics, transportation, maritime transportation, earth sciences, construction, environment, urbanism, architecture, society, health, economy and law. and the mayors of various municipalities of Istanbul.

In the report, maps were shared on topics such as assembly areas, the location of fire departments, temporary shelter areas, and earthquake risk.

Cost at least 360 billion liras

Imamoglu's words were included at the beginning of the report. İmamoğlu stated that the cost of making only the problematic buildings durable is 360 billion liras, and this corresponds to the three-year budget of the IMM. İmamoğlu stated that this should be done together with the government.

İmamoğlu said: “Assuming very optimistically, 4 independent units per building, the cost of only making our problematic buildings durable is 360 billion liras. Let me tell you this: This is a figure above the three-year budget size of the IMM! We have a budget of 115 billion liras. We know that earthquake preparedness is not just about strengthening these buildings! We need to do far beyond and costly work. Now is the time to mobilize! Our people from all four sides rushed to help by forcing their means, and they continue to run. People, households, communities come together in painful times and great disasters. Contradictions, accumulated hostilities, resentments are overcome.

call to government

Here I would like to make a call to our government. Let's all together relieve both the earthquake zone and the regions and cities that are under the threat of earthquakes such as Istanbul. Istanbul, one way or another, is the backbone of the Turkish economy, at least 1/3 of the GNP is produced in this region. About 1/4 of its population lives in and around Istanbul. The most valuable elements of its historical-cultural heritage are in this ancient city. Due to this accumulation and concentration in the past period, Istanbul has become the target of so-called large-scale projects.

“Let's invest in our people”

There stands the third airport, which was built by destroying its forests and water basins from place to place. A $10 billion resource was used for the building process. At the end of the day, we are talking about an investment that corresponds to a source of 30-40 billion dollars. This is done. We criticized. Meanwhile, we destroyed a working airport with its runways.

Now, at a time when millions of Istanbulites are living in great anxiety, I would like to make a call here: Let's do another big project at this moment of mobilization and national unity. Let's make the biggest project in the history of the republic. Let's not do that big project in a geography in the middle of the desert. Let's not bury 100 billion dollars in a land without people. Let's invest in our people this time."
