When you turn on your computer one morning, you may encounter a surprise message or warning message that your data is locked. Or, you may find out that something went wrong while you were working.

Hundreds of institutions and thousands of people experience this scenario or a similar one every day in the world. In Turkey, on the other hand, many organizations realize that they cannot access their data because they do not take the necessary security measures, or they see that others have actually read the data for years.

Those whose data is locked may have to make serious payments to see their information again.

“Ransom crimes have decreased, but the types of crimes have increased”

Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis found that in 2022, ransomware attackers extorted $456,8 million from their victims. This figure was $2021 million in 756. This indicates a 40 percent decrease in seedlings. Cyber attackers are now working on diversifying the way they attack and get paid.

Sharing new findings in research by Chainalysis, the blockchain data platform that provides data, software, services and research to government agencies, stock markets, financial institutions, and insurance and cybersecurity companies in more than 70 countries around the world, ransomware crimes are reported in 2022 compared to 2021. It was explained that it fell by more than 40% and that the cyber hackers turned their direction to small data leaks.

If you did not take your security measures from the beginning, you or an employee may have installed one of the ransomware on your system or servers by clicking on an interesting advertisement or link, or while trying to install "Crack" software in order to use a software "for free". These softwares that you have unknowingly installed have infiltrated your system once. Now your data may have started to flow or it may be locked.

It is explained that the awareness that arises due to the fact that the states also consider ransom payments illegal, has increased the precautions as insurance companies require comprehensive backups and a series of measures to cover situations such as ransom and attack.

For these reasons, cybercriminal gangs are not understood because they do not encrypt the data in the systems they have seized and they keep access to the data constantly. In this way, they make small but continuous gains by serving the data they have captured piece by piece.

Fortinet's report “2022 Cloud Security Report” published in 2022 reveals that the number of unique ransomware crimes is increasing. In the report; It is stated that the researches carried out show that the variety of data theft is increasing, no matter what the name of cyber crime is called “data leak, ransom or a different name”.

“The solution is uncompromising compliance with Bigrehber”

Emphasizing that the fact that data theft will increase by diversification is now an unchangeable reality, Turkey's digital transformation consultant BeyazNet CEO Fatih Zeyveli said that Turkey is lucky in this regard and continued as follows:

“Data is both our most important asset and our privacy. There are several standards in the world for protecting data. However, the Information and Communication Security Guide (BIGREHBER) published by the Presidency's Digital Transformation Office in Turkey and required for now by public institutions and companies in critical sectors, is one of the best standards in the world. If we want to protect our data, we need to make BIGREHBER compliance an indispensable gold standard for every institution and company. It is not enough to reach this standard, it is necessary to constantly maintain and improve this standard.”
