Member of the Turkish National Allergy and Clinical Immunology Association. Özge Atay warned that many diseases are related to harmful chemicals that enter through small cracks in the intestines, and that they turn their attention to dishwasher detergents.

Referring to the effects of dishwashing detergents on the immune system, Atay said, “In a study conducted in Switzerland, the effects of chemicals in dishwasher detergents on our immune system were examined and showed that alcohol ethoxylates in rinse aids, if they reach the intestines without adequate rinsing, will cause significant problems in the immune system. These diseases include inflammatory bowel diseases, digestive problems, metabolic syndrome, obesity, allergic diseases and even cancer.” said.

Stating that dishwashers have been used frequently in homes, cafeterias, cafes and restaurants for many years, especially in industrial and household types, and they have made life easier, Atay said, “However, since the harms of detergents and polishes used in dishwashers to our health have been on the agenda recently, the question marks that arise in their minds have also taken action experts. spent.” used his statements.

“Detergent residues cause damage to epithelial cells that prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body”

Atay, Turkish Scientist Prof. Dr. Referring to the research conducted by Cezmi Akdiş and his friends in Switzerland, he said that the effects of chemicals in dishwasher detergents on our immune system were examined.

Stating that they have shown that if the alcohol ethoxylates in the polishes reach the intestines without rinsing sufficiently, they will cause significant problems in the immune system, Atay said:

“They revealed that if the detergent and rinse aid residues are not completely removed after drying, they can remain on the surface of the dishes and cause inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis ulcerosa, metabolic syndrome, obesity, allergic diseases and even cancer development in humans, and most importantly, they can damage the ecosystem. It has also been reported that detergent or rinse aid residues cause different system diseases by causing damage to epithelial cells that act as a protective barrier and prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body.

“Especially affects the digestive system negatively”

Explaining that the harmful effects of dishwashing detergents were evaluated in laboratory conditions, Atay said that as a result of the study, alcohol ethoxylates are the culprit component that disrupts the barrier integrity, and that this substance is a non-ionic surfactant widely used in detergents and especially polishes.

Stating that other components such as citric acid and sodium cumenesulfonate do not affect the barrier integrity of epithelial cells, Atay said that if the allowable rate for alcohol ethoxylate is different, this substance causes many gene and protein damage, especially affecting the digestive system.

“Chemicals should be regulated in accordance with human health”

Underlining the importance of arranging the chemicals in the rinse aid and detergents in accordance with human health and inspecting them by authorized institutions, Atay said, “Especially in individual uses, in order to minimize the possible detergent and rinse aid residues with additional rinses, to use the machines in accordance with the user manual and to purify the detergent residues, the machines must be cleaned from certain residues. It will be beneficial to clean it regularly and to prefer natural products.”
