The Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK) team is happy to reach 132-year-old Şengül Karabaş 5 hours after the earthquake in Gaziantep's İslahiye district.

After the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, which is described as the “disaster of the century”, the team consisting of Turkey's favorite institutions such as JAK, AKUT, AFAD and National Medical Rescue (UMKE) and non-governmental organizations under the leadership of AFAD has been racing against time since Monday.

The JAK team, who took part in the search and rescue teams that pulled Yüsra Yıldız and her mother injured in the earthquake that occurred in Elazig on January 24, 2020, gave the first shot to 5-year-old Şengül Karabaş in the wreckage of Kardelen Apartment, Fevzi Paşa Mahallesi, Gaziantep's İslahiye district. was the one who reached.

The little boy was removed from the rubble and taken to the hospital in the 12nd hour of the earthquake as a result of 132 hours of work. About 10 minutes later, the little girl's father, Sezai Karabaş, was pulled out of the rubble.

The child, who was first checked by the health teams, asked the health officials for a "yellow coke" and sent a kiss.

The members of the team, which continued their search and rescue efforts in this region, talked about those moments.

JAK Search and Rescue Company Commander, Gendarmerie Captain Yusuf Atacan, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they were transferred to the region immediately after the earthquake as a JAK battalion under the Gendarmerie Commando Special Public Security Command.

Stating that they have been carrying out search and rescue activities in Kardelen Apartments since Tuesday, Atacan said:

“While they were working at noon, there was a gap. Our friends called out from that space. In return came a call for help. Later, as Yeni Anadolu Madencilik teams, Turkish Armed Forces elements and gendarmerie rescue teams, we started to progress with the method of opening a gallery down the gap, with the technique of drilling wells. Afterwards, we first reached Mr. Sezai. We provided visual and physical contact with him. After there was enough space, we first delivered our Şengül daughter to the medical teams. Later, we expanded it a little more and made it suitable for Mr. Sezai to come out, and we took him from there and delivered him to the health elements. Stranded in a wide area, they were standing, and when we contacted them, they had a gap of about 1-2 meters. We even advised them to stand back a little while we were working. Thanks to them, by doing their best, striving and never losing their hope, they also gave us hope. After 132 hours, we pulled out of the wreckage alive as a result of joint work with the search and rescue teams who were here.”

Emphasizing that this feeling is too special to describe, Atacan described those moments as follows:

“They didn't have anything with them, (Şengül) first priority was water, he asked us for water. Of course, we never gave him food or drink before handing him over to the medical teams. The medical teams gave him the necessary first medical attention. They were then transferred to the hospital. They were our first two creatures since our work here. Unfortunately, we have always reached the lifeless bodies of those in the wreckage. It has been a very promising event for us as well. We are more motivated now. In the earthquake that occurred in Elazig in 2020, as the gendarmerie search and rescue teams, we delivered the baby Yüsra and her mother to the health teams from the rubble. After that, it's really proud for us to touch two lives again at the 132nd hour after such a long time.”

We've Been Working Here For Days

Gendarmerie Lieutenant Merve Gezginci stated that they have been working here for days and are working to get them out of the wreckage alive.

Expressing that they are also happy to save Şengül Karabaş and her father, Gezginci added that this reflects very positively on them.
