'Earthquake Created Volcano' on Kuşkayası Mountain in Kahramanmaraş

Smoke rose from Kahramanmaraş Göksun Kuşkayası Mountain. A black liquid-like substance was also seen flowing down the mountain. Making a statement on the disturbing images, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Övgün Ercan stated that “lava, ash and water vapor coming out of the deep rift formed by the earthquake melted the snow on the mountain and flowed to the foot of the mountain as a hot fluid together with the mud”.

In Kahramanmaraş, where two major earthquakes occurred, this time the smoke and black liquid substance seen on the summit of a mountain caused uneasiness.

Upon these images on Kuşkayası Mountain, which is close to Büyükkızılcık village in Göksun district, citizens asked experts to clarify the situation.

ITU Faculty Member, Geophysics Engineer Prof. Dr. A statement came from Ahmet Övgün Ercan.

Ercan made the following assessment from his social media account:

“Because the gur (energy) produced in the M7,9 earthquake is equivalent to 1 megaton (1 million tons) of TNT (500 atomic bombs), it moved the stony slurry (magma) at a depth of 41 km and formed a fracture in Kahramanmaraş at 2000 C. It formed a volcano by spewing karatas (basalt).

In the Göksun Kuşkayası mountain of Kahramanmaraş, the lava (lava), ash, water vapor, which came out of the deep rift formed by the earthquake, melted the snow on the mountain and flowed to the foot of the mountain as a hot fluid with the mud at a speed of 40-60 km/h. If there was a settlement, it would have been fatal. It's called 'volcanic lahar'."
