Chinese Researchers Diagnose Eye Disorder in Children with Artificial Intelligence

Scientists from Sun Yat-sen University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have developed artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect visual impairment among children through smartphones.

Visual impairment is one of the leading causes of long-term disability in children worldwide. Early detection is often not possible, as children have only limited cooperation with standard vision tests.

According to the study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the Apollo Infant Sight (AIS) project, a smartphone-based healthcare system, can detect eye disorders at an early age. The artificial intelligence-based application can identify 16 eye disorders in children by recording and analyzing their gazing behaviors and facial features.

According to the study, AIS captures facial appearance and eye movement for deeper analysis using cartoon-like videos and artificial intelligence-based deep learning models. It analyzes these images and determines whether there is a visual impairment.

To develop and validate this system, videos from 3.652 children under the age of four were prospectively collected. The study also shows that untrained parents or caregivers using the system on their smartphones can achieve high-quality detection.
