The street, which will be closed to vehicle traffic for a certain period of time, will first complete infrastructure renewal and asphalting. Afterwards, the pavement arrangement, afforestation, lighting and urban furniture processes will be completed and the street will be made available to the citizens.

Şeyda Kaymaz, one of the architects of the Department of Studies and Projects, who gave information about the study, said, “Within the scope of the 2nd stage works of İstiklal Avenue, the section between the Hospital Street junction and the Özgür Children's Park junction will be closed to vehicle traffic as of February 23, 2023, and infrastructure work will begin on the street. Afterwards, the rainwater drainage line renovation and pavement arrangement works will continue.”
Kaymaz noted that the lighting system will be designed in a modern way, as well as the infrastructure and pavement arrangement works, within the 1nd stage of Istiklal Street, whose 2st stage has been put into service, and which is highly appreciated by the citizens and the local tradesmen; He said that with the renewal of urban furniture, garbage cans and under-tree grills, the area around Istiklal Street will have a more contemporary look.
Regarding the purpose of the 2nd stage work, which is aimed to be completed in May and opened to the use of Mersin residents, Kaymaz said, “Our main goal here is to restore Istiklal Street, which has an important place in the city's memory, to its former liveliness and thus to contribute to the tradesmen. In addition, we want to create more comfortable green spaces for our citizens by increasing the pedestrian circulation here and to protect the existing green space.
Drivers will be able to use alternative routes in the social media accounts of the Metropolitan Municipality due to the Istiklal Street 2nd stage works that will take place between the Hospital Street junction and the Özgür Children's Park junction.
