It has been learned that it will produce electricity by laying solar panels between the rails in Switzerland. Swiss startup Sun-Ways has reached an agreement with the country's national railway operator to generate electricity on rails. Swiss startup Sun-Ways is currently developing PV systems that can be placed between railway tracks. This project is scheduled to be commissioned in May 2023. It consists of a mechanically detachable PV system to be placed on a track section owned by Swiss rail operator Transports Publics Neuchâtelois SA.

The company developed the mechanical concept in collaboration with the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Swiss innovation agency Innosuisse. He said the PV system could be pre-assembled in a factory and then loaded onto a special train. The solar modules will then be laid like a carpet between the tracks. The PV system can also be removed at any time to enable maintenance work.

If the solution works, the company said the potential in Switzerland alone is huge, noting that the country has a rail network of about 7.000 kilometers. He claimed that up to 1 TWh of solar energy could be produced this way.

Sun-Ways is also looking beyond its domestic market. It was noted that there is a railway network of approximately 260.000 kilometers across Europe and approximately 1.16 million kilometers worldwide. He said he has already made contact with uncertain investors in Europe and the United States to offer his solution on an industrial scale.
