Izmir Metropolitan Municipality extends the service life of its vehicles by installing different functions within the scope of sustainability principle. Two diesel tankers of the ESHOT General Directorate, which had been idle for a while, were turned into fire extinguishers and transferred to the Fire Brigade Department. Thanks to two vehicles, one with 26 tons and the other with 35 tons, the teams are able to respond to fires more effectively.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality ESHOT General Directorate transferred two diesel tankers that have been idle for a while to the Fire Brigade Department. Thanks to two vehicles, one of which is 26 tons and the other 35 tons, which were converted into a fire extinguishing tanker with the own means of the Metropolitan Municipality and started to be used by the Izmir Fire Department, the hand of the fire brigade became stronger in the fight against fires without spending any money. A 35-ton vehicle is used in Aliağa, where petrochemical facilities are concentrated, and a 26-tonne tanker is used in Torbalı.

The first 35-ton water tanker

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Head İsmail Derse stated that with the global climate crisis, fires have reached larger and more dangerous dimensions and said, “There were problems in the use of water by transporting water, especially in large industrial and workplace fires. Fires are responded to with water tankers of 2 and a half, 5, 15 and 18 tons, but there are many industrial zones in İzmir. Therefore it is risky. Water runs out very quickly in response to large fires. For the first time in Turkey, a 35-ton water tanker started to serve in our fire department. We use these tools like pools. By keeping the water in the center, we control the entire fire. We are racing against time, and in this case, the correct use of water gives us a big plus.”

Aydın Mutlu, Fire and Emergency Response Manager of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Brigade Department, stated that both tankers have a significant benefit in responding to fires. Mutlu said: “We have revised these two tankers to meet our water needs in case of major forest fires and factory fires. We used one of the tankers in a factory fire in Torbalı and we found it very useful.”
