China's E-Commerce Giant Meituan Prepares Digital Yuan for New Year

The digital yuan, developed by the People's Bank of China, is planned to be used more in the new year. Meituan, one of the country's largest electronic commerce companies, has announced new methods and forms of gifting coins for the upcoming 'year of the bunny' celebrations.

"Lunar New Year", one of the most important holidays in China, this time coincides with January 22. On this very day, it is witnessed that red envelopes containing money and "presumed to bring luck" are presented to their employees, from family members and from the top in the workplace.

Last year, the Central Bank prepared an application that allows users to send virtual red envelopes. These virtual envelopes, which were sent to family members and friends, contained digital tokens in yuan. This year, Meituan, one of China's largest electronic commerce platforms, announced that all residents of a digital yuan pilot zone it has designated will be able to receive a surprise gift box for the New Year.

Some of the virtual gift boxes will receive red envelopes containing 88,88 yuan ($12,75). Some of the luckier ones will receive envelopes containing 888 digital yuan ($129,39). Digital yuan can be exchanged for real yuan via Meituan and related sites. In the meantime, it should be noted that the number '8' is seen as an extremely lucky number in Chinese culture. Another feature of Chinese culture is that rabbits symbolize longevity, peace and prosperity.
