The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced that the Mid-Winter Waterfowl Counts (KOSKS) will be held between January 15 and February 15.
According to the statement made by the Ministry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry carries out a census between January 15 and February 15 every year in areas that are important for waterfowl, for the inventory of waterfowl within the framework of relevant laws and regulations. These dates are preferred because the seasonal migration movements of waterfowl are the least and they are clustered in wetlands.
The censuses are carried out under the coordination of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks under the Ministry, with the participation of ministry employees, universities, NGOs and volunteers. By analyzing these long-term data, the policies and practices of the Ministry are guided in the protection and development of species and areas.
Censuses, which are one of the main methods used to monitor water bird populations and changes in wetland ecosystems, play an active role in the formation of a long-term perspective. Standard counts from the same points in the same areas are useful in analyzing long-term population trends.
Monitoring wetland operation and usage activities in the country with Mid-Winter Waterfowl Counts, directing conservation efforts, following the changes in the number of species and population size over the years, creating a base for species action plans to be prepared for endangered species, wetlands according to the census results, It is aimed to contribute to informing the public about waterfowl and the environment, to raise awareness and to offer practical training opportunities to bird watchers in Turkey.
Counts were made in 135 areas.
In the 135 census carried out in 2022 areas across Turkey, 104 million 1 thousand 396 waterfowl of 369 species were counted.
In the censuses in 2022, the most 556 thousand 200 individuals were clumsy, 103 thousand 304 individuals were teal, 84 thousand 685 individuals were black-headed gulls, 66 thousand 123 individuals were Flamingo, 66 thousand 79 individuals were mallard.

KOSKS censuses in Turkey were carried out between 1967 – 1973 and 1986 – 1989 by teams mostly composed of foreign bird watchers. Counts were made and reported by teams formed by non-governmental organizations and volunteer bird watchers between 1990 and 2013.
Since 2014, the censuses have been carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks.
