Soyer: “He is waiting for the moment that will come to light”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer“İzmir has hosted dozens of theaters and movie theaters from the 1880s to 1922. It is a Mediterranean city where dozens of daily newspapers are published in many different languages and balls are held. A city that has lived like this for hundreds of years. It has become one of the most important port cities of the Mediterranean. Then what happened, did we become so deserted? There is an incredible desertification. Especially in the production of arts and culture. But societies have genetic codes just like every living organism. Regardless, those genetic codes somehow persist, waiting for the moment when they will come to light. These are the genetic codes of this city, which has thousands of years of history. During my candidacy period, we said that we will work to make İzmir a city that produces not only culture and arts. With just such a project, İzmir is taking an important step towards becoming a city that produces culture and arts.”

“Let labor, hope come to life again”

Stating that thought is suppressed in societies where totalitarian and populist governments dominate, the President Tunç Soyer“The cost of living, impoverishment, all of these go hand in hand. Art is needed to breathe, to construct the future, to find the strength to resist oppression. Art is not something that is produced in the halls just for the pleasure of someone. Music, cinema and literature give us a breath of fresh air, strength to endure, and allow us to construct the future. Thank you to all the hard working masters. Uncovering the genetic codes requires heroism. Let this be an inspiration for Turkey as well. May the labor and hope that exist in those genetic codes come to life again," he said.

“We are also curious about the stories of Izmir”

Director and actor Ezel Akay said, “Our job is to tell stories. We want the number of our colleagues to increase. We thought that the stories of cities in Turkey were very limited. We decided to start from a city that inspired literature among many things. We are also curious about the stories of Izmir," he said. Screenwriter Levent Kazak, on the other hand, said that he was fascinated by the city every time he came to Izmir and said, "Our frame is magnificent, we will tell the story through Izmir." Anthropologist and writer Irmak Zileli emphasized that she was very excited when she heard about the project for the first time and said, “Man has been a storytelling creature since its existence. There are many experiences witnessed by the people of Izmir, those who live in Izmir or those who pass through this city. We know that each of them is very valuable.”

İzmir Foundation General Manager Deniz Karaca gave information about the I Write İzmir project and stated that more than 750 applications have been received so far.
