Anadolu Medical Center Endocrinology and Metabolism Specialist Dr. Erdem Türemen gave information about gestational diabetes.

Anadolu Medical Center Endocrinology and Metabolism Specialist, who said that the blood sugar level of the mother rises in gestational diabetes and may cause some complications during and after pregnancy. Erdem Türemen, “Pregnancy hormones create resistance to maternal insulin and weaken the effect of insulin. This is especially true on the 24th-28th. becomes very evident during pregnancy weeks. In some cases, the mother's insulin amount is not enough to meet this resistance, blood sugar rises and diabetes occurs. This picture, called gestational diabetes, usually resolves after pregnancy.

Emphasizing that the increase in the mother's glucose levels is of great importance for the baby, Endocrinology and Metabolism Specialist Dr. Erdem Türemen, “The immediate risk is that the baby is born heavier than the normal weight. This may complicate delivery or require cesarean delivery. Babies born in cases where gestational diabetes is not diagnosed or adequately controlled may be overweight during their childhood. If the baby is a girl, she may have a tendency to develop gestational diabetes as well. The third risk is the possibility of developing permanent diabetes after pregnancy in a mother who develops gestational diabetes under stress.

Emphasizing that diabetes treatment provides a healthy outcome of pregnancy, Dr. Erdem Türemen, “To all pregnant women on the 24th-28th. A screening test is performed with 75 grams of glucose between weeks. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed if the blood glucose measured 1 hour after drinking glucose is 140 mg/dl and above. Treatment is planned according to the result," he said.

Underlining that the follow-up of gestational diabetes should be done by a diabetes specialist, perinatology specialist, dietitian, diabetes educator and a pediatrician trained in newborns, Endocrinology and Metabolism Specialist Dr. Erdem Türemen said, “In the examinations performed every 2-4 weeks, blood glucose values are evaluated, the growth and development of the baby is monitored ultrasonographically, and a decision is made on the appropriate delivery method and time. If the baby has macrosomia, the baby is delivered by cesarean section without waiting 40 weeks.

Reminding that insulin resistance disappears and diabetes improves immediately after birth, Dr. Erdem Türemen, “In the mother who uses insulin, postpartum glucose should be measured and insulin therapy should be discontinued. Otherwise, severe low blood sugar may occur. But in rare cases, diabetes can become permanent after birth. In this case, insulin therapy is continued as long as the mother gives milk. The next type of treatment should be decided by the diabetes specialist.
