İzmir Chamber of Dentists (İZDO) Board Member Prof. Dr. Tunç İlgenli stated that oral health is an integral part of general health and said that early diagnosis and treatment gave successful results.

Ilgenli, who gave information about gingival diseases that are frequently encountered in our society, said, “The deposit called microbial dental plaque, which is formed by microorganisms that cover the teeth and always live in the mouth, causes gingival diseases. In some people, a number of results can be seen up to the loss of the tooth. At this point, the person should pay maximum attention to his own oral care.

Reminding that it is important to acquire tooth brushing as a habit from a young age, Prof. Dr. Tunç İlgenli said, “All surfaces of the teeth should be brushed for a minimum of three minutes twice a day. Since gingival diseases do not show many symptoms other than bleeding, a doctor is usually consulted when teeth are shaken or gingival recession occurs. This is already the last stage of the disease. If the problems in the teeth and surrounding tissues are intervened from the beginning within the scope of preventive medicine, the patients are advantageous in terms of material and morality.

Gum Diseases Can Also Interact With Systemic Diseases

Ilgenli stated that gingival bleeding is the most important determinant of gingival diseases and said: “If it is not treated during this period, it may progress and turn into inflammation of the tissues holding the teeth in some people. In this case, multiple tooth losses that may occur negatively affect the chewing function and aesthetics of the person, and cause a significant deterioration in the quality of life. This inflammation, which occurs in the mouth and surrounding tissues of the tooth, interacts with various systemic diseases such as diabetes and affects each other negatively.

Get an annual inspection

Emphasizing that routine dental examination is necessary once a year, even if there is no dental health problem, Prof. Dr. Tunç İlgenli gave the following information: “At this point, considering that oral health is an inseparable part of general health, we will both protect our oral health and prevent an undesirable situation related to our general health with a routine dentist check to be made once a year.”
