Continuing its efforts to make Bursa a healthy and livable city, the Metropolitan Municipality has completed the first phase of the creation of the city's strategic noise map and the preparation of the action plan. Strategic Noise Maps of Bursa were prepared within the scope of the works that started with the contract signed between the Metropolitan Municipality and Çınar Environment Laboratory in August 2021. Strategic Noise Maps, which affect especially sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools and residences and evaluate the exposure of 3 million 147 thousand 818 people to noise, were approved by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

Noise sources under the spotlight

Within the scope of the study, noise sources including residential areas with a resident population of more than 100 thousand, main highways with more than 3 million vehicles per year, main railways with more than thirty thousand trains per year, industrial zones and entertainment venues near the settlement were examined. Osmangazi, Yıldırım, Nilüfer, Mudanya, Gemlik, İnegöl, Kestel and Gürsu districts were included in the study, including district municipalities, universities, 14th Regional Directorate of Highways, Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization, Provincial Police Department, Provincial Directorate of National Education, Provincial Health Directorate and other Relevant institutions and organizations also provided support. Noise measurements and vehicle counts were made in the region covering 550 kilometers, highways, 47.2 kilometers of existing, 11.7 kilometers of planned railways, 300 entertainment venues, 7 industrial zones and 10 industrial facilities as noise sources. In the light of this data, maps were created with modeling studies.

Action plan

After the approval of the Noise Maps by the ministry, the preparations for the action plan, which is the second leg of the project, started. According to the results of Bursa Strategic Noise Maps, the next road map was determined at the meeting of Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Ulaş Akhan within the scope of the action plan preparations that started with the determination of hot spots. The project will continue with information meetings to be held with the participation of stakeholders, a workshop and a survey for the participation and awareness of the public. The Action Plans, in which all aspects of the issue will be addressed, will then be submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change for approval.
