7,5 Million-Year-Old Fossils Unearth in Kayseri

The 7,5 million-year-old fossils unearthed during excavations with the support of Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality continue to attract the attention of the world. In this context, the three-hoofed horse, which was found in fossil excavations, was raised by scientists.

Metropolitan Mayor Dr. The fossil excavations, which Memduh Büyükkılıç meticulously and diligently followed, will become Kayseri's reference in paleontology in the world. While the three-hoofed horses found in these studies were revolted by the scientists, Expert Anthropologist Ömer Dağ, who works in the Scientific Excavation team of the Metropolitan Municipality, gave information about the fossils found in the ongoing excavations. Stating that Kayseri has great richness in the fossil field, Dağ said that the 7,5-million-year-old fossils belonging to the horse group 'Hipperion' found in the Yamula Dam and Barsama regions are the ancestors of today's horses.

Expert Anthropologist Dağ stated that they cleaned it in the laboratories of the Metropolitan Municipality Science Center and said:

“Our excavation work started in 2018. During the summer season, we continue our excavation work as long as the climate is favorable. Our excavation work continues in the summer, and our laboratory work continues in the winter. We carry out conservation and cleaning processes in the laboratory at the Science Center of Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality. In general, we have three-hoofed horses, rhinoceros and giraffe in our fauna name group 'Hipperion'. We have specimens belonging to the elephant group. Today, the horse has only one hoof. The 2nd and 4th fingers are atrophied. Purely due to climate adaptation. But our horse that lived at that time has three hooves. It is vestigial in modern-day horses. My day is shorter than their horses. When we look at his teeth, the crown heights are very high in today's horse. Our horses at that time had less crown heights. Because it has to do with food.”
