ÖDEMİŞ:“A BAZAAR IN ANKARA'S CITY AND SOCIAL MEMORY”

Pointing out that Anafartalar Bazaar is an important public space in Ulus Historical City Center, ABB Cultural and Natural Heritage Department Head Bekir Ödemiş said:

“It is a project that was achieved through competition in the 1950s. Anafartalar Çarşısı is not only a commercial area during the development process of Ulus, but also an important commercial center that brings the public and art together with the artworks it contains. This is a bazaar with the first escalators… It is also an important center in that sense. Precious ceramic works are available here. Internationally renowned artists have transformed the walls, galleries and columns of the bazaar into galleries in Europe. We care about the citizens to catch this artistic environment while shopping. A structure with an identity in Ankara's urbanization process. The preservation of this structure is important to us. We do not have a chance to preserve those ceramic artifacts when we demolish them. We prepared the restoration project for their protection. Our project, which we will realize without disturbing its original texture and structure, passed the Conservation Board. Restoration works are now being carried out by our Department of Science Affairs. Both the guests who come for shopping and our shopkeepers who do business here are very satisfied. Because this bazaar has a place in the city and social memory of Ankara. By preserving such a cultural and architectural structure, we plan to continue the commercial structure within it and to pass on the works of important artists of the Republic within it to future generations.”

“THIS RENOVATION GIVES US HOPE”

Stating that they are satisfied with the renovation works carried out by the Metropolitan Municipality and that the renovation gives them hope, the shopkeepers of Anafartalar Bazaar said:

Edip Hero: “I have been a tradesman in Anafartalar Bazaar since 1965. It will be much better than before. Its old state was neglected, it was filthy, the customers did not want to come. But after the bazaar is renovated, it will be better.”

Halime Trusts: “This is a historical bazaar. I believe more customers will come when it is renewed. In this way, we will continue to work in a safer and cleaner environment. We are very happy.”

Hulya Ozer: “I have been a tradesman in the bazaar for 32 years. It used to be very neglected. There was no heating system, everywhere was broken, the sinks were old, the floors were very old. We are happy to work in a more comfortable environment such as a shopping mall. The customer potential of this place is very good… The customers did not want to come because it was like a ruin. The new version will have a huge impact on both the increase in customers and our earnings.”

Selman Sahin: “We had electricity, lighting and heating problems before. Everywhere is renewed. The exterior is very important to us, and the exterior will also be renewed. It is being renewed without spoiling its historical texture. The renewal of our bazaar will provide an advantage in terms of increasing the number of customers. I would like to thank our President Mansur on this issue. Better days await us as tradesmen.”

Serkan Kartal: “For the last 20 years, apart from the trade problems, as Ulus tradesmen, as tradesmen in Anafartalar Çarşısı, a climate of despair, loneliness, and abandonment have prevailed. After the last local elections, I think we are not surrendered to our own destiny. We felt that there was a Metropolitan Municipality that took care of us. It was a market that had not been nailed until today. There was no technology adapted to the present day in the market. Now this renewal gives us hope. There is a municipality on our side, we have a power behind us. We are not alone. Started exterior renovation. Interior renovation, heating-cooling system, lighting system are all done one by one. We had a hope for the future. We are very grateful to our Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş and his team in this regard.”
