Metro rail systems witnessed rapid growth, from 2011km in 3 cities in 222 to 2022km in 15 cities in 810. The additional 1.032km of approved metro rail network will extend the reach of metro systems to 27 cities. Also, lighter urban rail systems such as Metrolite and Metro Neo are being conceptualized and developed by many small and medium-sized cities. Approved metro rail projects are expected to spend INR 3 trillion ($40.4 billion, €31.2 billion) over the next five years.
