One of the leading companies of the Turkish defense industry, STM Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Tic. A.Ş.'s engineers working in the fields of military maritime, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and informatics, talked about the firsts, achievements and works they signed in the defense of the country on 5 December World Engineers' Day.

In line with Turkey's "fully independent defense industry" targets, STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Tic. A.Ş. is known for its projects in the field of military maritime, such as Turkey's first national frigate TCG ISTANBUL, MİLGEM Ada Class Corvette, Logistics Support Ship, submarine design, design and modernization. In addition to these projects, with the projects of unmanned aerial vehicles such as the mini-strike UAV KARGU, the national spotter UHA TOGAN, the ammunition release UAV BOYGA and the fixed-wing kamikaze UAV ALPAGU; STM's engineers, who have signed important projects in the field of cyber security and informatics, explained their engineering activities to DHA on 5 December World Engineers' Day.

FEMALE ENGINEERS HAVE SIGNATURES ON NATIONAL SHIPS

Mediha Sönmez Tanrıbakan, who works as Combat Systems Integration Group Leader in STM's Naval Projects Directorate, stated that she has been working in the defense industry for about 18 years. Noting that he worked at different stages of domestic, national and international export projects, Tanrıbakan said, Test and Training Ship TCG UFUK, which started its duty in Mavi Vatan this year, MİLGEM ADA class Corvettes, Turkey's first national corvette project, Turkish Navy in the 100th Anniversary of the Republic. He said that he took part in different parts of many projects such as Turkey's first national frigate project (Stock Class) TCG ISTANBUL and Sea Supply Tanker to be delivered to Turkey. Stating that they work actively at the table and in the field from the design of a ship to the delivery process, Tanrıbakan stated that their work as Combat Systems Engineers can be grouped under three main headings: design, integration and testing.

'PROUD TO BE PART OF MY COUNTRY'S SUCCESS'

Stating that Turkey has achieved significant achievements in the field of defense industry in recent years and that he is proud to be a part of it, Tanrıbakan said, “As an engineer, it is a very proud thing to deliver a project that you have worked on at every stage from the beginning to the end. I think it's the stage where you get the best response from engineering. We, the Turkish engineers, have achieved many successes in naval projects in the breakthrough our country has made in the field of defense industry. Over the years, we have reduced our dependence on foreign countries to a large extent, and we have become a prominent country in this field in the world. It is also an honor to be a part of such a success. We do our best to set the bar higher in every project we do.”

NATIONAL SHOOTER AND SEEKER DESIGN UAVS

Industrial Design Engineer İrem Güldemet, who works in the development of tactical mini UAV systems at STM's Autonomous Systems Directorate; Stating that he worked in unmanned armed and unarmed aerial vehicles projects here, he said, “We are developing projects such as the Striking UAV Kargu, the spotter UAV Togan, the ammunition dropping UAV Boyga, and the fixed-wing kamikaze UAV Alpagu. As an Industrial Design Engineer, I support product development in the field of defense industry, which I am honored to serve. News such as 'Striker and spotter UAV systems are being used effectively in the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) in domestic and international operations' is our source of motivation.

BEING A SOLDIER'S CHILD WAS EFFECTIVE IN CHOOSING THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY

Güldemet said that she was a soldier's child and that this was also effective in her choosing to work in the defense industry, "I am a soldier's child. I grew up at home with national values. 'How do I serve my country?' This place presented the question to me as an opportunity. One day, while watching the news with my father, when I saw that the Kargu UAV we saw in the news was our product, I asked, 'Did you do this?' she asked. I proudly said 'yes'. This has been a solid source of motivation for me. It was also a serious motivation that one of our senior commanders conveyed his greetings about the design of the product we made.”

PROTECTS DATA AGAINST ATTACKS

Hüseyin Kıribrahim, who works as a Network and Network Security Specialist in STM's data centers projects, pointed out that data has critical importance today. Noting that he has been working in this field for about 8 years, Kıribrahim said, "We are conducting studies to ensure the security of data centers against cyber attacks and disasters that may occur in terms of the design and design of network and network security equipment in public institutions and data centers, and to ensure the security of public institutions."

Talking about the fact that a data center can be interrupted for different reasons, Kıribrahim said, “A data center can be interrupted due to electricity, it can be interrupted due to an earthquake, it can also be interrupted by malicious attacks. In order to eliminate and minimize these interruptions, and to ensure business continuity of data centers, we design data centers that work as a backup or co-working with data centers.

'DATA CENTERS ARE CRITICAL IMPORTANT'

Talking about the critical importance of data centers as disruptions in data centers may prevent people from receiving services, Kıribrahim said, “As you know, many public institutions actually serve citizens over the internet. Data centers are of critical importance in order to ensure that these services are provided uninterruptedly and that the citizens can access the service instantly. Interruptions to be experienced during a service may cause the citizens to be unable to receive various services. In this respect, we, in data center projects; We are working to modernize existing data centers and to prevent problems that may arise from future attacks. At the same time, we are designing and designing new centers in parallel with the existing data centers in order to ensure business continuity in case of any interruption of the existing data centers.”

Saying that data is increasing rapidly today and therefore its importance has increased within this framework, Kıribrahim said, “As STM, we are working on data center projects to be followed more actively in the public, based on the importance of data. I am currently working on the largest data center project in our country, which is currently being carried out in the public sector. The existence of this project was important for me to come to STM.”
