Scientists working on the poles met with young polar enthusiasts in Trabzon. The 1th National Polar Sciences Workshop was held on December 6, World Antarctica Day. More than 2 people attended the workshop. More than 300 scientists, students and teachers came together.
THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIENCE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED
The 2018th National Polar Sciences Workshop, which came into effect within the scope of the "National Polar Science Program 2022-2017" under the auspices of the Presidency and under the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and has been organized by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Polar Research Institute (TÜBİTAK MAM KARE) since 6, It was held at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU). During the two-day workshop, the results obtained from the national polar science expeditions were discussed. Celebrations were also held in the workshop due to the World Antarctic Day on 1 December.
MUST BE MORE THAN AWARENESS
In the opening session held at KTU Atatürk Cultural Center, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal's video message has been published. Stating that the melting of sea ice and glaciers in the polar regions is a warning in his message, TUBITAK President Mandal said, "While an awareness-oriented process was carried out a few years ago, working in this field has now become a necessity rather than awareness, with the challenges brought by climate change." said.
3 BALL POSITIONING SYSTEM
Mandal noted that they have organized 2017 national expeditions to the Antarctic continent since 6 and 2019 national expeditions to the Arctic region since 2, as part of their national polar science activities, and said, “We have implemented our temporary science camp in Antarctica in 2019. We set up our Automatic Weather Observation station and started to receive data by installing our 3 global positioning system stations.” he said.
PERMANENT BASE KEY QUALITY
Explaining that they successfully completed the 6th National Antarctic Science Expedition in February of this year, Mandal said, “We are currently working feverishly for the preparations for the 2023th National Antarctic Science Expedition to be held in 7. Another important issue, which is the key to long-term scientific studies on the continent, is the realization of our permanent science station, which is planned to be established in Antarctica.” said.
ANTARCTICA DAY MESSAGE
TÜBİTAK MAM Climate Change and Sustainability Vice President and TÜBİTAK MAM Pole Research Acting Director Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy also said in her speech that, unlike the previous ones, in this workshop, students who are candidates to become scientists in the future are able to present the studies they want to do or are enthusiastic about.
A CONTINENT DEVOTED TO PEACE AND SCIENCE
Emphasizing that the workshop was also important because it was held on Antarctica Day, he said, “Antarctica is the only continent in the world dedicated to peace and science, which does not belong to any country. December 1 is the day this agreement was signed. We wanted to celebrate this day together with all the participants who are candidates to become scientists in the future.” said.

KTU Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Çuvalcı also mentioned that the effects of global climate change are starting to be felt in our daily lives and emphasized the importance of polar studies and stated that as KTU, they are happy to support both polar studies and the organization of the workshop.
GREAT ATTENTION
More than 2 scientists, nearly 300 finalists, and many academics, students and teachers came together in the workshop attended by more than 100 people. 172 papers were accepted at the workshop, 87 of which were oral and 85 poster presentations.
HOW TO GET TO ANTARCTICA?
10-year-old Alina Aslıhak, who participated in the workshop open to middle school students and presented her project, said, “Here, I aim to raise awareness about the logistics of Antarctic Science Expeditions. My project is a research on how to go to Antarctica, what we should take while going to Antarctica. It's a project to raise awareness. They talked about krill in the presentations here, there is a separate tool to probe krill; There is also a separate tool for holding penguins.” she spoke.
THE EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON PENGUINS
Melih Miraç, 10, said, “My project is about the impact of global climate change on penguins. When the ozone layer becomes thinner, the penguin population declines. We humans can do a lot to prevent this from happening. We can stop using deodorant, we can use public transport. If the distance is close, we can walk, we can ride a bike. This is healthy for us and for our environment.” said.
THE DIFFERENCE OF ANTARCTICA AND ARCTIC
Miraç said to his peers who are interested in the poles, “There is something wrong with the poles, I made this mistake in the beginning. Antarctica and the Arctic are different places. Penguins live in Antarctica, polar bears live in the Arctic.” made a reminder.
VERY EXCITING
Defne Yıldırım, who attended the workshop from Samsun, said, “It is a great feeling for us to be here, we have the opportunity to explain our projects to the people here. We have the opportunity to talk and discuss with people who have been to the poles before and know the climate there, and develop the next year's projects. We would love to be in Antarctica and try our project there. This is already at the top of our targets for the next year.” said.
1 DECEMBER CELEBRATIONS
During the workshop, TÜRKSAT and Anadolu Agency opened a booth and shared their works on the polar regions, while the painting exhibition covering the Arctic and Antarctic regions attracted great attention from the visitors. Within the scope of the 1 December Antarctica Day celebrations, the Kahoot Quiz and concerts were also held at the workshop.
