Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom organizes a tournament with the participation of approximately 800 athletes in cooperation with the Turkish Chess Federation to support the spread of chess in Mersin.

Mersin, the pearl of the Mediterranean and where Turkey's first nuclear power plant was built, is preparing to host the 'ROSATOM Mersin Regional Chess Tournament', which will be held for the first time in cooperation with the Turkish Chess Federation (TSF) and the Russian State Nuclear Energy Organization Rosatom.

In the tournament, athletes will compete in two categories: under 8 years old and 9-12 age group. The tournament, the first special regional chess championship, will be one of the biggest sporting events in the region with the participation of approximately 800 athletes.

The first qualifiers will start on 10-11 December in Tarsus, Silifke and Bozyazı. Second qualifiers will be held in Erdemli, Aydıncık and Mersin Center on 17-18 December. 128 licensed athletes from each district will participate in the qualifiers. Those who are in the top 3 will be eligible to compete in the final to be held on 24 December. The winners will also receive special prizes sponsored by Rosatom.

With the tournament, it is aimed not only to support the athletes in Mersin and its surroundings, but also to make a great contribution to the development of chess sport in the region. Athletes will also have the opportunity to increase their national strength rating (UKD) thanks to the tournament.

Alexander Voronkov, Rosatom Middle East and North Africa Director and Regional Vice President, said in a statement about the tournament: “As Rosatom, as a high-tech company, we are honored to cooperate with the Turkish Chess Federation to support the chess tournament in Mersin. Chess is a very popular sport in Russia. The whole world knows the great chess legends raised by Russia. We are confident that the launch of this tournament will increase the popularity of this sport in the region. I am also pleased to state that the Akkuyu NPP construction has made the region a center of positive change. It promotes socio-economic growth, infrastructure development and offers new opportunities. Thanks to the tournament, we are happy to invest in Mersin's people and children, whom we see as the most important assets.”

Athletes showed great interest in the tournament, which was held for the first time. It was noteworthy that the quota reserved for the qualifying matches was filled right after the tournament was announced via TSF.
