1st Stage of the Works on the North Ankara Protocol Road Tunnel Completed

The 2009st phase of the urgently initiated works of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality on the North Ankara Protocol Road Tunnel, which was made using artificial rocks in 1 and which created a life and property safety problem due to the fall of the rocks as a result of incorrect and faulty manufacture, has been completed.

The second stage works of the tunnel, which will be opened to traffic in a week, will be carried out in the summer months when the schools are closed.

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, which relieves the traffic of the capital city with new roads and crossroads, also continues to carry out maintenance, repair and renovation works on streets and boulevards, especially on the main arteries.

The first phase of the emergency maintenance, repair and renovation works initiated by ABB in the North Ankara Protocol Road Tunnel, which was constructed using artificial rocks in 2009 and which caused a life and property safety problem due to the fall of the rocks as a result of incorrect and faulty manufacture, has been completed.

ALL ARTIFICIAL ROCKS IN ESENBOGA DIRECTION HAVE BEEN CLEANED

As part of the works started by the Department of Science Affairs in October, all artificial rocks in the North Ankara Protocol Road Tunnel in the direction of Esenboğa Airport were removed and cleaned. With the completion of the underfloor heating operations on the tunnel floor in the aforementioned direction, the work has reached the final stage. The tunnel, which has been made more durable and safe with the extension of the tunnel entrances and exits, will be opened to traffic in a week.

“WE NEEDED TO BE RENEWED AT A MOMENT”

Özgehan Burak Özen, Civil Engineer of the Department of Engineering and Construction Construction, stated that after the works started, rock types of different hardness were encountered regionally in the structure of the ground, and that due to this situation, arrangements were made in the project and the construction period was extended.

Noting that the structure of the artificial rocks in the landscape part of the tunnel deteriorated over time, Özen said, “Recently, the rocks have started to fall on the road. This place needed to be renovated immediately. Our citizens are very important to us. The barbakans on the slope above the tunnel were clogged and could not fulfill their duties. As a result, liquefaction occurred in the ground. During the process, the mass was mobilized and the spills started with the formation of cracks on the slope. Artificial rocks, whose structure deteriorated, caused accidents with material damage.

STAGE 2 WORKS WILL BEGIN AFTER SCHOOLS CLOSED

Explaining that the works in the Ankara direction of the tunnel will start in the summer months with the closure of the schools in a way that will not make the people of the capital aggrieved, Özen also gave the following information about the works to be done in the 2nd stage:

“In order to prevent accidents, the entrances and exits of the tunnel will be extended, the landscape consisting of artificial rocks that continue to spill will be removed, and it will be made more stable and safe by filling in a way that will reduce the slope slope. Within the scope of 'North Ankara Protocol Road Tunnel Entry and Exit Landslide Prevention Work'; Cleaning of artificial rocks, excavation, bored pile manufacturing, foundation and curtain reinforced concrete manufacturing, prefabricated beam manufacturing and assembly and road underfloor heating operations will be carried out.
